Supplying cluster bombs an act of desperation by US Moscow

The escalatory move is also an admission of Ukraine's failure, a senior Russian diplomat has said

The US decision to include cluster munitions in its latest batch of military aid to Kiev is an admission of failure and a desperate attempt to stave off defeat, Russian ambassador to Washington, Anatoly Antonov, said on Friday.

"Cluster munitions are a gesture of desperation. Such a measure speaks of the awareness of the United States and its satellites of their impotence," Antonov told reporters. "However, they do not want to admit their own setbacks and the failure of the Ukrainian military's attempts to carry out an offensive against the Russian regions. Therefore, they commit new acts of madness."

Washington continues to raise the stakes in the conflict "with tenacity worthy of a better use," Antonov noted, calling the current level of US provocations "really off the scale, bringing humanity closer to a new world war."

"What's striking is the cruelty and cynicism with which Washington approached the issue of transferring deadly weapons to Kiev," the ambassador said. "The administration completely ignored the arguments about the inhumanity of such a step voiced by experts, human rights activists and lawmakers, turning a blind eye to civilian casualties. Now, through the fault of the United States, for many years there will be a risk that innocent civilians will be blown up by malfunctioning submunitions."

In contrast, Moscow rocket-bombing Ukrainian cities is decidedly not an act of desperation.

Moscow launching hypersonic missiles at civilian targets is likewise not an act of desperation.

The hypocrisy is strong in this one!

Regards,

Moscow is just angry the Wagner Group didn’t think of it,
so they could claim clean hands.

We’ve supposedly banned use of cluster bombs and Joe is waving that ban. We’re just being called out for hypocrisy. Then we’ve got Lindsey Graham saying he’s going to lead a bipartisan effort to get Ukraine into NATO.

What a mess.

It sounds like you're upset that Russia takes this war seriously - "Not fair! You're fighting too hard!"

The Russians have taken a page from the US playbook in World War 2 (back when the US actually won wars): destroy Ukraine's industrial capacity and its means to fight.

I think sending Depleted Uranium ammo was the same thing. It’s all they have left in the cupboard.

If Russia is not driven out of Ukraine soon, NATO and the EU are kaput.

Russia started and is fighting an unjust war.
And it has been using a vast array of dishonorable means to do so.

Many of Russias supporters seem to take a gleeful pleasure in Russian injustice and brutality.

The Russians started this war kinetically.
Cluster bombs clear out their trench
warfare mentality.
They don’t seem to realize this escapade of theirs is
educating the USA and European MIC just how weak Russia is
in conventional warfare.
And as a country.
Nukes don’t scare me,
70 Plus year old men that know they will die soon, anyway,
do.

NEW YORK, July 8. /TASS/. The US has moved to give Ukraine cluster munitions as Kiev and Washington are running out of ordinary ammunition, US President Joe Biden said in an excerpt of an interview with CNN that was published on Friday.

“This is a war relating to munitions. And they’re running out of that ammunition, and we’re low on it,” Biden said. “And so, what I finally did, I took the recommendation of the Defense Department to - not permanently - but to allow for this transition period, while we get more 155 weapons, these shells, for the Ukrainians,” he said.

Biden said it was a “difficult decision.”

The US president added that cluster munitions are needed to bolster the chances of the Ukrainian counteroffensive.

“The main thing is they either have the weapons to stop the Russians now - keep them from stopping the Ukrainian offensive through these areas - or they don’t. And I think they needed them,” he said.

The US on Friday officially announced it would transfer cluster munitions to Ukraine. The announcement didn’t specify the exact number of munitions to be provided.

Farhan Haq, a deputy spokesperson for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, earlier said that the UN chief supports the Convention on Cluster Munitions and opposes the use of this type of weapons on the battlefield.

Cluster bombs can contain hundreds of submunitions. When the bomb is detonated in the air, the submunitions are scattered over an area of tens of square meters. Some of them do not explode immediately and remain on the ground, posing a threat to civilians long after the conflict has ended. The Convention on Cluster Munitions, which was adopted in 2008, has been joined by 111 countries, and another 12 have signed but not yet ratified it.

According to the international human rights organization Human Rights Watch, the proportion of unexploded submunitions is usually significantly higher than stated.

You mean like how the US and Europe sent Bradleys and Leopard IIs straight into Russian minefields, without clearing the mines first?
