The U.S. military released dramatic video of a tense encounter on Wednesday over the skies of eastern Syria as Russian fighter jets were seen "harassing" three American military drones carrying out a mission against the Islamic State group, an official said.
In a statement, the U.S. Air Force general in the Middle East labeled the run-in "unsafe and unprofessional behavior" and called on Russia to stop what he called "reckless behavior" that has been carried out by pilots flying over eastern Syria where the U.S. still has 900 troops assisting in anti-terrorism efforts.
The conduct "threaten[s] the safety of both U.S. and Russian forces," he said.
Wednesday's incident is the latest in a string of dozens of what officials describe as provocative Russian flights over eastern Syria, which prompted the U.S. to send F-22 Raptors to deter flights above American military bases there.

U.S. forces in northeastern Syria have a relatively new mission: securing oil fields not only from ISIS, but also from Syrian government and Russian forces.

Why are these fields so important when it seems like it’s official policy of the current administration to reduce “fossil fuel” production?

The United States has as much business in Syria as Russia has in Ukraine.
Our troops are guarding Syrian oilfields anc convoys of Syrian oil being shipped out of Syria, I suspect it is being sold to fund the Kurds, to entice their loyalty in resisting integration into Syria.
And maybe ISIS and other islamist warlords too, to keep them killing Syrians and Iranians.
Its kind of funny, isn’t it?
We attempted a failed color-revolution in Syria. The Syrians have told Globohomo in Arlington to leave their territory. They have invited the Russians in for protection. The Arab states have all said the USA and NATO must leave Syria.
But don’t harrass our drones there!

We should send F-22’s up to cover our drones like we did when Iran was also harassing our drones.
