Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, looking to shift his run for president into a higher gear after an early series of missteps, spent the last two weeks rolling out an immigration policy and holding town halls with voters. But rather than correcting course, he stumbled again this week, raising questions about where his campaign is heading.
First, Mr. DeSantis’s team was forced to battle allegations, including from fellow Republicans, that it had shared a “homophobic” video on social media. Then, a top spokesman for the main super PAC supporting Mr. DeSantis acknowledged that former President Donald J. Trump was the race’s “runaway front-runner,” while Mr. DeSantis faced an “uphill battle.”
“Right now in national polling we are way behind, I’ll be the first to admit that,” the adviser, Steve Cortes, said in a livestream Twitter event on Sunday. It was an admission notably at odds with the confidence that the governor’s advisers usually project in public.
To top it off — in a visual representation of his recent troubles — Mr. DeSantis got soaked by a rainstorm as he marched in an Independence Day parade alongside several dozen supporters in New Hampshire — the crucial early nominating state where his super PAC, Never Back Down, stopped running television advertisements in mid-May.
Meanwhile, Mr. Trump hosted a rally in South Carolina that attracted thousands of people over the holiday weekend, a reminder of his enduring popularity with Republicans despite losing in 2020 and now facing at least two criminal trials.
The race is still in its early days, but Mr. DeSantis’s rough week highlights the challenges his underdog campaign faces as it seeks a coherent strategy to break through against Mr. Trump.

He has money to waste, and keeps getting more.
Better to find out now, than have him walk into the Nomination in 2028 as Trump’s VP - and run a campaign like this.
Neocon money. I am so disappointed and I could care less about his “personality”. Unlike many, I have looked carefully at his donor list and his inner circle of advisors and his base of GOPe elites are people whom I despise.
What missteps?
Trump supporters aren’t going to vote for Meatball.
He has no base of support other than disgruntled Republican consultants and donors that Trump destroyed in 2016.
If I lived in FL, I’d be pissed.
What kind of person runs for higher office just after winning re-election?
Pictures of Ron DeSantis do not advance his cause.
I will give enormous credit to his wife for her energy through these photo ops.
She is a real gem and she really stands with her man.
I will say these two display positive relationship characteristics and hope they have a very long life together.
Look at his daughter. Take her home, Meatball. Let her be a kid rather than a campaign prop.
The problem for DeSantis is he’s found his footing.
His foot is stuck in a rather large orange colored bear trap & he doesn’t know how to get out.
Donor class GOPe meat puppet.
“What kind of person runs for higher office just after winning re-election?”
One thing I give W. Bush credit for, he was asked to commit to serving a full term and answered “No I won’t”.
DeSantis is too much like the Clintons. He’s too scared to tell voters something that they might not like to hear, so he pretended he had no intention of running.
You are a nasty bitter small man
Maybe he should sign blank checks to big pharma and use the pronouns fauci n birx… works for the lockdown prez which gave us mail in ballots and Dacca amnesty.
I think DeSantis has to prepare himself to win debates.
He should have staffers and hired conservative & leftist college students prepare hundreds of questions with the aim of stumping him up. The staffers should review previous debates and presidential candidate interviews.
He should spend at least 60 minutes a day getting toughened up.
LOL.
Jeb had $100 Million when he announced. Where did that get him?
I find Mr. DeSantis’ floundering objectively interesting. He ran an effective, well messaged campaign here in Florida last year. Now he is on the national stage and is giving Jeb! serious competition for the worst run and most lackluster campaign in recent memory.
I expected a lot more energy and I think he simply did not understand how different this campaign would be. If Vivek Ramaswamy passes him in the polls, I think he is done for, donors will flee his campaign and he’ll end up as a Jeopardy question next season.

“Trump supporters aren’t going to vote for [unneeded slur].”
I will vote for the 2024 Republican presidential candidate. I voted for Romney and Dole.
My ‘crystal ball’ is clear at this point in time.
