GOP Threatens Spy Agencies’ Premier Surveillance Tool
The New York Times via Yahoo ^ | July 3, 2023 | By Karoun Demirjian

WASHINGTON — An intensive drive by right-wing Republicans in Congress to vilify the FBI with charges of political bias has imperiled a program allowing spy agencies to conduct warrantless surveillance on foreign targets, sapping support for a premier intelligence tool and amplifying demands for stricter limits.

The once-secret program — created after the 9/11 attacks and described by intelligence officials as crucial to stopping overseas hackers, spy services and terrorists — has long faced resistance by Democrats concerned that it could trample on Americans’ civil liberties. But the law authorizing it is set to expire in December, and opposition among Republicans, who have historically championed it, has grown as the GOP has stepped up its attacks on the FBI, taking a page from former President Donald Trump and his supporters.

“There’s no way we’re going to be for reauthorizing that in its current form — no possible way,” said Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, a key ally of Trump’s who is leading a special House investigation into the “weaponization” of government against conservatives. “We’re concerned about surveillance, period.”

At issue is a program that allows the government to collect — on domestic soil and without a warrant — the communications of targeted foreigners abroad, including when those people are interacting with Americans. Leaders of both parties have warned the Biden administration that Congress will not renew the law that legalized it, known as Section 702, without changes to prevent federal agents from freely searching the email, phone and other electronic records of Americans in touch with surveilled foreigners.

Remember when liberals were against the government having unchecked power to spy on citizens?

FISA must be completely disbanded. It was created after the Church commission to control the FBI and its illegal activities. It became a rubber stamp that allows all the same activity but now they can claim it was with court approval. America has no place for secret courts and domestic spying. The regular court system is a entirely adequate.

The “tool” has been woefully abused. Just like firearms should be kept out of the hands of criminals, certain privileges should be kept from rogue law enforcement officers. If they can’t be trusted, they forfeit our trust. It’s not rocket science.

The government proved they can't be trusted. The courts proved they are poor custodians of our liberties. The courts proved there are many tiered justice systems depending on your bureaucracy ranking.

Prove no more. Slay the bad idea.

Enough of This “Right Wing” bull squeeze. Wake up people! We are NOT “right wing”! Traditional American Values are Mainstream Values. Yielding speech to the Left, and by default, to the Media has brought us to the place where, in thought, “right wing” is automatically followed by “Extremist”. Now the people are being convinced that everyone on “the right” is an “extremist”. These pigs at the NYTimes, who couldn’t get enough of Hitler, Stalin and Castro need to be confronted by angry crowds of protesters at their Manhattan Offices. It is they who should dread getting up and weeding their way through throngs of the people they hate. To hell with the NYT.

Any student of history would tell Jim Jordan that there's no way they are going to stop now.

The NYTimes is protecting its source. If asked, they simply cannot explain how America survived before its intelligence services went rogue.

DC is full of politicians who want to vote against things as long as they will pass.

And want to vote in favour of things, as long as they don’t.

Both Parties (both sides of the UhiParty).

If DC Repubs really start voting against 702, you will see enough Dems switch to get it passed.
