In his first year as Florida governor in 2019, Ron DeSantis paid a somber visit to the memorial for the 49 people who lost their lives when a man opened fire at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando.
His wife, Casey, clutched a bouquet of white flowers as DeSantis took in the faces of those who died on that June night in 2016. Most were Latino. Many were gay. Before leaving, DeSantis signed a wall with the words: “Florida will always remember these precious lives.”
For Florida’s LGBTQ community, the day brought a glimmer of optimism that this new Republican leader might listen to their concerns, said Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith, an Orlando Democrat and the state’s first openly gay Latino lawmaker. The governor, Smith said, “appeared to be extending an olive branch to the LGBTQ community.”
“An olive branch,” Smith added, “which he has since rescinded, stomped on and destroyed.”
... “DeSantis is likely to run for president of the United States and a lot of this is posturing on his part,” said Sen. Jeff Brandes, a Republican who voted against the bill. “It’s all red meat. It’s not red meat for the state of Florida but for the national base. It’s all about staying in the headlines.”

“I never get answers that make any sense when I ask Only Trumpers how they know something.”
You must have me confused with others. I will HAPPILY vote for DeSantis if he makes it to November. He’ll still lose, but I won’t be a part of that happening.
I think you mean that all POLITICIANS regardless of party ARE LIARS!
Wow, so many things wrong with that statement after the first paragraph. He should have stopped there, just as Gov. DeSantis shouldn’t have added the LG-whatever community to his original statement, but at least he wasn’t claiming that all Floridians were “in solidarity” with sexual deviants.
Trump got it right. Thanks for posting this, lasereye.
There are estimates that 7% of Americans identify being in the LGBT community.
That means a great number of families in the U.S. have had to reconcile their conservative Christian beliefs with the reality of having gays in their own or extended families.
It was at first a shock to me to learn that certain members of our extended family were gay, but in the bigger picture, it’s an adult decision you have to live with. Heck, even the CEO of Apple is gay.
In my opinion, the issue of transgender is about not abusing children or allowing a minor to choose something that they may regret later when they are adult.
In Georgia a couple years back, we had an adult transgender attend a local Republican BBQ and she explained this to us. So having surgery of this type — as an adult — is simply an extension of personal freedom.
