FAIRFAX, VA — Challenger Saddam Salim was declared the victor by the Associated Press in the 37th District race for the Virginia Senate, upsetting incumbent Sen. Chap Petersen, according to unofficial results.
"I am truly humbled by the community that rallied to support me in this race," Salim said, in a statement issued late Tuesday by his campaign. "This was an incredible grassroots movement of constituents all across the district and we achieved this victory together. I look forward to being your Democratic nominee and continuing our fight for the issues that we care about: gun violence prevention, affordable housing, reproductive rights and so much more."

Challenger from Bangladesh defeated incumbent in northern Virginia Senate primary with 54% of vote. Campaign focused on incumbent's opposition to anti-gun legislation. District has increasing number of foreigners / immigrants, partly as a result of redistricting. Incumbent seems like preppy type from Byrd machine days. Surname as first name, went to Williams College, and Virginia Law School. Think Republican has really good chances in general election. Will they really elect a Muslim. This is one of 4 northern Virginia incumbent state senators defeated by "progressives" in primary. Seems like Republicans may pick up some of those seats.

A Republican winning in the DC suburbs? Sounds unlikely.

LOL. Good ol' Virginia Democrat White Boy getting blown away by their very own pander bears. "Chap" was hoisted by his own petard.

Republican Reid asked Petersen’s supporters to vote for him. Said we don’t want this to become like Baltimore or San Francisco. I think he has a chance. Not sure if they are ready for the first Muslim in the Virginia Senate.
My mother was telling me about Petersen’s awful positions on gun issues. I said if it is Petersen versus Saddam Salim, I would vote for Petersen. Wouldn’t need to know about the issues.

Honestly given the choice between a Muslim immigrant and a Marxist Democrat I’d have to think long and hard about who to vote for if given no other option.

“...With 94. 7 percent of the votes counted, Salim had 9,966 votes (53.8 percent) compared to Petersen’s 8,616 (46.2 percent)....”
A 1,350 vote margin.
That’s an interesting number.

You can always write in your dog’s name. I did that in 2016 in the Senate race in Illinois between Mark Kirk and Tammy Duckworth.

I don’t see any evidence the incumbent was a Marxist. He was attacked for being for gun rights.
Virginia has state elections in odd years, originally to keep turnout down. Less than 20,000 votes were cast. Salim apparently got support from foreigners and crazy liberals. I don’t think it is at all certain that he wins in November.

He is a democrat, so either he’s a Marxist or a Marxist enabler. So really the same thing.
To: xxqqzz
So Saddam won and he doesn’t know the Americans have the RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS! He never looked at the Constitution I’d say...

Challenger from Bangladesh won the democrat primary.
He’ll face the republican in the fall.
How will the democrat fare in the general?
It will likely hinge on hispanics. beats me how they will view things.
