Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis almost quadrupled his net worth in a year, thanks to a seven-figure payday from his bestselling memoir, "The Courage to be Free."
The 2024 candidate's net worth as of December 31, 2022, was $1,174,331, according to documents he filed to the Florida Commission on Ethics ahead of a July 1 deadline. A year earlier, DeSantis' net worth was nearly $319,000. The lift in salary was largely thanks to a $1.25 million book advance DeSantis got from Broadside Books, the conservative arm of HarperCollins Publishing that is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.
Since filing his last financial disclosure, DeSantis lowered the amount he owes on his student loans slightly, from $21,284.92 to $18,628.66. The governor's financial disclosure became public on Friday evening, the same day that the Supreme Court struck down President Joe Biden's student loan forgiveness program.

DeSantis total book advance was likely $10-20 million (even Megyn Kelly got 10 mil)
But they are paying it out little by little to keep DeSantis on a short leash.
If they want him to run third party, they have the financial leverage to enforce it.
Frankly, DeSwampis is too corrupt or too dumb to be independent of the GOPe and go for this deal.
Enough, Trump is earning the nomination by becoming 2.0. Stop with the dds obsession.
And Trump filled almost his entire administration with daddy and junior Bush's D-team of Swamp Creatures and is now taking 10% of all his donations (if honestly, not more) to pay his legal fees.
Where in this article if DeSantis soliciting donations to pay his paltry $18k in student loans? He owns no property. He owns no stocks.
Yet, according to you, he's corrupt?
“Unfortunately, he still has student loans to pay off.”
I prefer Donald Trump to DeSantis, but the headline is stupid. How about “Fortunately, he is paying his student loan down and is not in default”?
Taking a multiyear payout like this makes DeSantis financially beholden to Murdoch for all the years of the payout.
If you can’t see the leverage that gives Murdoch over DeSantis, it’s no wonder BoomerCons keep getting taken by guys like DeSantis, Romney and the Bushes.
“from $21,284.92 to $18,628.66”
That’s like saying “This guy is paying his car note down and is not in arrears.” Yeah? So?
The problem with nominating some-one with by DC standards, no money, is he is totally dependent on donors and funders.
If he runs into Lawfare, the legal fees alone can run into millions of dollars.
Even Conrad Black was financially strained by fighting against an Independent Counsel.
A minimum financial standard for financial independence from the Swamp is being able to pay millions in legal fees, and not break a sweat.
I’m sorry but there it is.
DeSantis owns no property? one would think he has a place for his wife and kids to live other than the governors house, or is that why he is running for president so he doesn’t have to get responsible and afford on his own a stable living place for his kids? the guy is govt tool, nothing more, too bad for kids growing up under that.
This is just stupid and utterly tone deaf of DeSantis, given current events. If he had the wherewithal, he should have simply paid off his student loans and made this a non-issue.
So we're supposed to believe the Trump family, Don first, then Junior, then Eric, are our only hope for the foreseeable future? Or some other billionaire class power broker who by today's standards would by default be an international businessman, just like the Trumps?
I'm not buying it. If DeSantis is President he will get good legal counsel one way or another. He doesn't seem to have a penchant for stirring up problems for himself, either.
He didn’t make much money until recently. He was in the military before running for office.
Why is it "an issue" to have student loans? These don't even appear to be the cost of an automobile, either. I personally know people older than him that are still paying student loans. They're super low or maybe even zero interest and super low monthly payments, so no need to rush if you need money for other things, which you might considering the sharks he's swimming with. Sure it would probably make sense to pay them off, now, but that's assuming the interest cost isn't locked in, and I'm not his financial consultant.
I don’t like it. But it is what it is.
People on FR continually wonder “what happened” to people who are elected to Washington and then turn into Swamp creatures.
Answer: it is the threat of millions in Lawfare legal fees if they defy the Swamp, with the possibility of millions in unearned wealth if they go along.
How do we know this?
if they are super low interest and small monthly payments why are so many people looking to have them forgiven? just lazy or disrespectful and don’t want to pay back their loan?
So? With Student Loans at a good rate, better off paying down the higher loans/cards first. And that’s to say I’m a fan of meatball on the national stage.
That's probably true for most who go up there. But not all. And I doesn't mean I'm ready to say henceforth only billionaires need apply.
I find DeSantis meager beginnings and current lack of wealth incredibly refreshing. Sure, he may go south, but he's not already a made man in one way or another, so he's not bound by any big/overseas business deals or corruption. Nor does he seem even remotely materialistic like most we've seen around the White House the last 15-20 years.
oopsy... that’s NOT to say...
Nauseating.
