We've never been LESS threatened by 'extreme weather' David Harsanyi takes Washington Post to task for recent story about deaths

"Extreme heat kills more people in the United States than any other weather hazard," is the first claim in this Washington Post piece warning about the deadly summer heat – and it is almost certainly false. Similar warnings about the deadly weather appear in virtually every mainstream media outlet.

First off, the only reason "extreme" temperature kills more people than other weather hazards is that deaths from weather have plummeted over the century – even as doomsday climate warnings about heat, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and droughts have spiked. All extreme weather accounts for only about 0.1 death for every 100,000 people in the United States each year. That is a massive drop from the time of your grandparents. The Post and others should be celebrating the fact that humans have never been less threatened by the climate in history.

The Post also warns that 62 million people in the U.S. may be "exposed" to dangerous heat "today." That's a lot of people, even considering nearly all of them live in the southernmost spots in the country and it's summer. The Post counts anyone exposed to heat over 90 F as being in some level of danger. Fortunately, most Americans enjoy the luxury and health benefits of air conditioning, one of the great innovations of the past century.

An author/researcher named Alex Epstein talks a lot about this. He has pointed out - WHAT is it that has helped humanity reduce deaths from extreme weather events by something like 1000X over the last 200 years? So-called “fossil fuels!”

One of the reasons fewer are dying in hurricanes is due to FOSSIL FUEL launched satellites that can detect and track hurricanes and are made with who knows what kind of non-natural materials.

Do people remember hurricane Camille in 1969? Or the 1974 tornado super outbreak that that covered much of the USA east of the Mississippi?

Yes, heated homes and cooled offices. The governor of WA State passed the first in the country, carbon tax on oil and gas production and refining. This tax is going to be passed on to consumers in seven western states, where the fossil fuel products are used. CA uses diesel fuel to produce electricity in the summer months. So, the high cost of keeping cool in the summer will be even higher. I suggest that CA shut down the air conditioning in government offices and public buildings before they do the rolling Black outs.

I understand how this would affect consumer prices in WA, but how does this affect consumers in the other 7 western states?

Whatever happened to that steady parade of category 5 hurricanes we were supposed to be getting?

But...but...liberals everywhere are yelling: “The sky is falling! The sky is falling!” and climate change is responsible.

Rubbish!

Greta and all her friends need to look at the facts...for a change.

My first question of climate alarmists is when did they disconnect their home air conditioning. They either shut up or fly into a rage.

I believe all the hysteria around climate change is just a sneaky way to implement communism into our lives.

That was right in the middle of the “coming ice age” crisis.

IIRC, Camille actually killed more people in Virginia, than the Gulf Coast, from flooding.

I remember Camille very well. I got back to Waveland/Bay St. Louis the day after. MHP had troopers on the BSL bridge toting a Thompson to turn sightseers around from going across to Pass Christian.

“The sky is falling! The sky is falling!”

A chicken ran up to the farmer and exclaimed “the sky is falling”.

The farmer said, “Oh my God, a talking chicken!”

Right? In Texas, we call this the second summer (spring was 1st summer). Second summer will be followed by fake fall, and then we have 3rd summer.

The increased tax will be placed on the oil companies, who are passing it on to consumers in all states.
