Yevgeny Prigozhin used a false pretext to lead his Wagner Group forces in an armed insurrection against the Russian state, according to a senior U.S. official.
Prigozhin had been plotting ways to reverse his fortunes in the face of waning power and came up with a plan to claim his forces had been bombed, which he would then use to justify actions against Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Russian defense leaders, the senior official said.
The precipitating factor for Prigozhin’s military march was the directive that his forces be increasingly incorporated into the Russian military, the official said. Prigozhin did not know for certain whether it was Shoigu or President Vladimir Putin behind it but felt he was being leveraged and undermined, leaving him angry and determined, according to the official.
The plan came to fruition on Friday when Prigozhin said in a video that Wagner fighters had been killed by Russian missile strikes and vowed to punish Shoigu and Russia's chief of general staff. The claim was "basically a hoax," according to the senior official.

With alcohol consumption at high levels...I’d suggest that Prigozhin had burned out a fair amount of braincells, and hadn’t really thought where or how this would work out.
Prigohzin needs to go back to selling hot dogs from a hotdog cart, this time in Siberia
This smells like a CIA psyop. The Agency figured that Prigozhin was the match who would light the fuse and kick the ass of Putin so they threw a huge pile U.S. taxpayer money Prigozhin’s way to conduct a coup. Prigozhin went along with it just long enough to get the payout. Now this last high stakes scheme has collapsed and we hear the West is ready to negotiate. Problem is, they will be negotiating from a very weak position and Putin knows it. It is just the latest U.S. royal screwup like Afghanistan. When will they ever stop meddling and fooling around with phony dictators in the name of advancing their favorite, easy to reach for excuse - protecting democracy.
Ukraine and NATO seem quite worried now that Prigozhin and his boys are their new neighbors.
I certainly agree with your first sentence wholeheartedly, even though I do have caveats about the rest.
I thought Prigo was against drunkeness and had strong rules about alcohol use by his Wagners.
I quipped he was just a mercenary who saw an opportunity for wealth and power...and wondered who had urged him on..
So failed Psyop then. Its also possible Prigozhin is actually still Putin’s ally under that scenario, catfishing the CIA out of millions.
One thing that is certain, this whole episode makes Putin look strong not weak, like the press pretends.
Ukraine and NATO seem quite worried now that Prigozhin and his boys are their new neighbors.

After decades of NATO expansion up to Russia’s border, I can say let’s see how the US war cheerleaders handle this…. The best part? China announced bases to be placed in Cuba…..good for the goose, good for the gander.
They ( Russia China) are just getting started…..Russia in Venezuela, Nicaragua,….China in the Panama Canal and now Cuba….maybe the war cheerleaders need to ditch their senile old leader and find some one who can play chess.
The Monroe Doctrine ain’t what it used to be.
Now that he is no longer useful to the one worlders, he’s being thrown under the bus.
The headline lost me when it sourced U S Official.
The Monroe doctrine also said were would stay out of Europes sphere. WWII is an obvious exception. But none of this crap today would be approved by our founders.
Putin false flag, and a smart one.
They shook down the CIA / DOD for that $6.2 Billion.
LOL
Interesting, the US admits that a False Flag attack was perpetrated on Russia.
Pretty sure the US is correct about this.
