I could see tangibles being moved to other nations. I didn’t
like it, but it wasn’t like someone would be harmed if they
couldn’t get a new microwave or television.

This mentality is why it happened.
In the event of a major war, the USA would need those industries to convert from civilian to military production, like WW2.
That’s the harm.
