Trump Dominates the GOP Field, but Consistently Fails in Head-to-Head Polling Against Biden
Redstate ^ | June 26, 2023 | Joe Cunningham

There is no denying that Donald Trump still holds the most sway over the Republican base. He is a former president, he is still (in their eyes) being persecuted unfairly by the Democrats and the Biden administration, and he is certainly an attention-grabber.

But there is a major difference between dominating a primary and winning a general election, and the most recent polling seems to show that, for all his support among Republicans, Trump is still not yet favored over Joe Biden in a “Devil You Know vs. Another Devil You Know” election fight.

On Sunday, NBC News released its latest poll on the 2024 election, and the numbers are fairly consistent with what we’ve seen – that Trump is a dominant force in the GOP, but the American public at large is still very hesitant where the former president is concerned. This is the same poll, mind you, that shows nearly three-quarters of Americans think the country is on the wrong track. So if Trump is still struggling to overcome that, well… things aren’t great.

At this point, individual polls are almost meaningless. You have to look at trends, which is what the RCP rolling averages do. If you look at those, you will see that Trump is actually polling lower on average than he was before the latest indictment, despite getting an initial 1-2 point bump.

>>Having Trump on the ticket will lose the White House, and both houses of Congress.

Exactly - all trump has done since he left office was solidly his base, not expand it - his base wasn’t enough to win him the last election, it won’t be enough next time either. We need to win the WH or the nation is lost for at least another 4 years.

Yes, I’d rather have an imperfect candidate that wins, then a perfect one that loses (again).

Sadly, I agree completely with all you just said.

Independents are sick of the Trump drama, because they fail to understand that the left will paint anyone who is not one of their own with the same brush - it’s all they’ve got.

Ill-informed Americans are living in a limbo world.
They enjoy the fruits of free market capitalism. Starbucks coffee, unlimited fuel, unrestricted traveling privileges, etc.
They also think, since life is so good, they can afford to engage in their virtue signaling desire to embrace socialism.
Yet we are on the cusp and when slide into hard socialism, it will be too late to back pedal into the norms that they so flippantly allowed to disappear.

Unless we can educate ouselves, our country is doomed.

This is just bad reporting. Even though the latest NBC poll showed Trump getting clobbered while DeSantis ties, several polls DO show Trump winning, and a few of them even show him doing better than DeSantis.

For me its Trump or nobody. Should Biden get in let him drag this country into the pits, and then maybe the dumb assholes who voted for him will wise or rise up.

That’s right - the only way the GOP can win is if we run a RINO candidate that has a platform that’s 90% Democrat.

Thanks Romney - we know how you think.

If the country would rather vote for Biden than Trump than it’s basically over for America. We are too far gone to even be worth saving

Should we stroll down memory lane and reminisce about the 2016 election polling and how sHrillary had such a commanding lead in the polls that an Irish bookie paid off pro-Hillary bets before the election was even held?

Related question: how many independents are left? An argument could be made that all the "Trump drama" has moved some former independents into protect-America made and made them more conservative. And discussion about how the "Trump drama" has moved some independents to the left ought to at least factor in how many independents moved right as well.

I guess you figure the RATS won’t cheat against DeSantis.

Biden four points ahead of Trump, 49-45.

Margin of error.
