Trump says 'vital' federal role remains for regulating abortion

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former President Donald Trump said the federal government has a role in regulating late term abortions, but declined to provide specifics on what that role was in a speech to a conservative audience on Saturday night.

Trump has been relatively quiet on the issue of abortion throughout his campaign for a second term, putting him at odds with other Republican presidential hopefuls including his current biggest threat to the party nomination, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who enacted a six week ban on abortions in his state.

"There of course remains a vital role for the federal government in protecting unborn life," Trump told attendees at the Faith and Freedom Coalition's annual conference in Washington, D.C., on Saturday night. "We will defeat the radical Democrat policy of extreme late term abortion."

6 weeks....It was more restrictive than what was on the books.
Of course he signed it. No he doesn’t support it. It’s just the lesser of two evils.

By that, everyone except Pence supports abortion, including Trump.

I'm surprised you figured that out without me having to draw you a diagram. I call that progress.

A mother would gladly give her life up for her child. That is the essence of motherhood and fatherhood.

SCOTUS made clear that this is a STATE issue, and should remain so.
There is NO NEED for any of these folks to weigh-in or sponsor any other opinion.

But, as long as the media get away with saying SCOTUS ruled abortion not legal, the arguments will continue.

Both Jefferson and Orwell were right...

Trump never met a big centralized federal government he didn’t love. This is par for the course for Emperor Trump.

Trump did much to stop the growth of government.

You don’t turn a battleship around that quickly. What happens if your do?

Right now the issue has returned to the states.

States that allow infants born alive to die after attempted abortions are murdering citizens. A baby becomes a US citizen AT BIRTH. That violates equal protection and due process. It is unconstitutional.

States are also using federal tax dollars to fund abortion.

States are allowing (encouraging and incentivizing) the trafficking of human body parts in support of their murder-for-hire crimes against humanity.

These things demand intervention at the federal level.

I’d support further restrictions, but we’re already looking at Civil War to stop leftwing insanity anyway. Might as well just get it over with.

I respectfully disagree. Unless you want to put something about abortion in the Constitition, there should be no federal role. Alito was right to hand the issue back to the democratic process in the states. I am fine with each state coming up with their own view and their own solutions -that’s what federalism is all about. That does not take any pro-life agenda off the table of Conservatives, which Conservatives can continue to carryout in the states.

I agree!
Both sides don’t want to do it, because its harder to do! Neither side wants to do what would be Constitutionally necessary to make their position national. That is get a Constitutional Amendment that either permits or bans. I am opposed to abortion, but I am more opposed to abusing the text of the Constitution. Creative lawyering & judicial interpretation seeing “penumbras and emanations” from the text have done decades and decades of damage to the Constitution. We can’t pick and choose; we are either for the Constitution as written or we’re not!

Very “Lindsay Graham” of Trump opening up his mouth on this!
He’s not going to win any friends with the proabortion types. They wouldn’t vote for him if he opened up a string of abortion shops in his resort.

if he didn’t sign it...the 24 weeks law would have remained. There was no “0” option. He does not support it. you just don’t get it.

Trump spent more than any President in history. He’s the same as all the rest. Just because he conned a bunch of sheep into thinking he was an “outsider” doesn’t make me the bad guy for calling him out.

Again, you repeat the media, instead of looking with eyes wide open. Do you really think the power to cut spending was all Trump. He did what he could as executive.

Lets say we do it your ideal way, cut federal spending by 50 %, what happens?

Why do you keep repeating the media?

So what you're saying is, the President has no control even though he had a Republican House and Senate for two years.

Let me guess, you'll tell me that Congress is full of swamp monsters and they all worked against Trump. So why elect Trump again if he's powerless against the swamp?

I did not say NO control. That is you.

Look closely, he did everything he could. The fight was huge with a lot of battles. He had to pick an choose.

It used to be anyone that hits over 40% was a hero. Trump did that.

Children run on instant gratification. The want their candy NOW.

The battle is long and hard. Are you up for it?

Trump cannot win another national election. He’s behind in the swing States. He will lose. Are you up for that? Stop being a baby. Grow up and look at the data. Trump lost in 2020 and his endorsed candidates in the important swing elections lost in 2021 and 2022. He cannot win!
