the Trump campaign needs to be aware of an emerging thread of data that suggests that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis may do better in the general election.
New survey results from Public Opinion Strategies build on previous results and are starting to frame a coherent story about how the general election might look with different Republican candidates.
The new survey results indicate that Mr. DeSantis would do better than Mr. Trump in the general election in specific battleground states. For example, in Georgia, Mr. DeSantis leads President Biden by 3 percentage points in a general election matchup.
In the same matchup, Mr. Trump loses Georgia to Mr. Biden by 3 points.
In Pennsylvania, Mr. DeSantis runs 2 points better than Mr. Biden while Mr. Trump runs 4 points behind Mr. Biden.
Back in April, Mr. Trump trailed Mr. Biden in Pennsylvania by the same 4 percentage points. Mr. DeSantis led Mr. Biden in Pennsylvania by 3 points.
In Arizona, the current spread between the candidates appears greater. Mr. DeSantis runs 6 points better than Mr. Biden while Mr. Trump runs 3 points behind the president. That is also a greater margin than was evident in polling done in April.
Those results indicated that Mr. DeSantis would defeat Mr. Biden nationally by 3 percentage points while Mr. Trump would lose nationally by 3 percentage points — the same margin by which he lost in 2020.

When Biden ran, it was the “not-Trump” effect and no real record. He just would not be Trump.
Voters in 2024 must now weight Biden’s record and the prospects of him continuing. That is much more negative than 2020 scenario for Biden.
Keep in mind that Obama/Biden lost 6 points of support from 2008 to 2012 on that very construct. The idea that the 2020-2024 record is better or less bad than the 2008-2012 record is fairly absurd. 2009-2012 was a period of economic recovery which we also do not have in this era.
If Biden wins by exactly the same percentages he won in 2020— we can be confident that fraud in the voting process is entrenched.
The primary will payout, but the Trump I heard tonight is the Trump I want.
What if Trump picks Tim Scott for VP, I don’t want that.
Wrong.
Free Republic is a forum devoted to advancing conservatism and there's nobody doing this better right now on than national stage than Governor Ron DeSantis.
DeSantis has made himself odious to most of MAGA.
What if Trump wins the primary in 2024, loses to Biden and runs again in 2028?
All that Trump has to do is ask voters “ how’s it going now, compared to then?” It’s a no-brainer, and Smiths persecution and Bidens crap will give him 24-7 attention.
Speaking of which, which party has three white people running for President? Which one has two blacks, two South Asians, a Latino, and a “body postitive” person?
He’s got to pick somebody who brings him votes he doesn’t already have, and that means picking someone freepers won’t love.
Speak for yourself. The Base does not feel that way, Trump can’t be President forever. There is NO ONE ELSE in 28. Don’t say Lake, that is a joke.
He won't be.
After Trump, as the likely GOP nominee, gets totally schlonged by Biden in '24, the same people here will be telling us that DeSantis needs to wait for his turn in '32.
"Only Trump can drain the swamp in '28!"
Some deadenders here would support him, most would say it’s time for new Blood. If the Civil War 2 doesn’t go hot.
Trump was a net negative in the general election.
He’ll probably pick someone like that, assuming he’s nominated. DeSantis would not.
Yeah, but that person better not be the front runner in 28, if Trump gets the Nomination now.
That’s a big red flag, and a problem. It’s NOT a bad thing to have 2 MAGA Canidates, after years of being fed Globalist Garbage.
”thread of data”
Is that like a “grain of truth”?
A “ray of hope”?
A “shot in the dark”?
A “snowball’s chance in hell”?
Yeah, I’m going with the last one.
Honestly, I think that’s a lot more dubious question than you think,
unless that was your point.
I’ve lost my desire to see him follow Trump.
I don’t see much on the horizon.
Good luck folks.
The voting majority will ultimately support the biggest voting block, if empowered, middle-class, working Americans.
