Russian mercenary chief says his forces are rebelling, some left Ukraine and entered Russia city

The owner of the Wagner private military contractor made his most direct challenge to the Kremlin yet on Friday, calling for an armed rebellion aimed at ousting Russia’s defense minister. The security services reacted immediately by calling for the arrest of Yevgeny Prigozhin.

In a sign of how seriously the Kremlin was taking the threat, security was heightened in Moscow and in Rostov-on-Don, which is home to the Russian military headquarters for the southern region and also oversees the fighting in Ukraine.

While the outcome of the confrontation was still unclear, it appeared likely to further hinder Moscow's war effort as Kyiv's forces were probing Russian defenses in the initial stages of a counteroffensive.

Prigozhin claimed early Saturday that his forces had crossed into Russia from Ukraine and had reached Rostov, saying they faced no resistance from young conscripts at checkpoints and that his forces “aren’t fighting against children.”

According to a Russian channel, local media in Rostov are reporting that Wagner fighters have cordoned off the Southern Military District HQ, the police office, FSB office, and city administration building.

They must believe they can defeat the Russian Army.

Socialist draw play, causes dreamers of, and activists for, freedom . . . to take some action and thereby reveal themselves to socialist police state security.

Answering someone’s mention of how Outin still has the nuc codes, what good fo they practically do him in this internal conflict? Perhaps this is how Ukraine comes out ahead in this invasion.

I didn’t think Prigozhin would be this stupid. He is decisive, relentless and has good leadership skills but clearly he has piss-poor judgement. What the hell is he thinking!

This SHOULD not affect the Ukrainian war.

All those forces have their existing leaders and are under no threat from the rebel.

UNLESS he seizes the logistics infrastructure in Rostov.

That scenario could completely turn the war.

Maybe. In other cases these things have turned into anti-state “preference cascades”, as in East Germany and Romania.

On a knife edge in Russia I think.

this must be Ukraine op.

Lol. If this is a Ukraine op, Ukraine just captured the 11th largest city in Russia.

If Prigozhin does not survive this, it doesn’t matter. Russia will not win the war in Ukraine. The morale of the Russian Army is already low. It will continue to drop.

How can this not affect the Ukraine war when Russia’s heroic fighting Divisions in the war attempt a coup and start conquering Russian cities?

“I didn’t think Prigozhin would be this stupid. What the hell is he thinking!”

I also have no idea what his plan is, but one possibility is to carve out his own statlet. Why gamble on a push to Moscow when taking the Rostov region gives him control of Russia’s oil and gas exports.

He can set himself up as the warlord of that region. The Russian Army in its current state could do little to prevent it.

“UNLESS he seizes the logistics infrastructure in Rostov.

Exactly so, materially. But there is another route of influence - demoralization. What happened to the Russian armies in 1917. Just hearing that Rostov has fallen may matter as much as whether Wagner is seizing trains.

Most the Russian army is in the Ukraine.
Wagner just has to fight cops and conscripts.
Looks more like a ploy by Putin to
have an excuse to withdraw from Ukraine.
Sue for peace and re-build his military.
Which will take decades.

This may have some Ukrainian influence, who knows. Maybe someone offered a very sweet deal. But if so it’s already one of the biggest intelligence coups in history.

Sometimes a weak structure just needs a little push.

LOL - The only thing he is setting himself up for is a bullet to the brain. Just IMHO, of course.

This is the only recent coup attempt that turned out to be real.
