It seems to me that visiting a grave in reverence is one thing; but going to the bottom of the sea for a thrill is completely different.
Those people didn’t want to honor the dead so much as they wanted to put a notch on their ‘explorer’ belts.
You could say the same of Buddy Holly.
Or the sad crash sites on the cliffs in Grand Canyon. They don’t get visited much either. Cliff face and all. Still wreckage there, though.
Some of us are just feeling empathy. It’s fascinating to see what happened (sort of “bottle-necking” as in car accidents), and sometimes we feel a connection and need to feel the sympathy for the victims.
