Five people were killed and at least 42 were injured in multiple shootings as violence erupted across the country over the holiday weekend.
A shooting at a Juneteenth celebration in a suburban Illinois town left one person dead after at least 20 people were shot outside a shopping center overnight.
It happened around 12:30 a.m. on Route 83 near Honeysuckle Lane in Willowbrook, Illinois, Battalion Chief Joe Ostrander with the Tri-State Fire Protection District told WLS.
Witnesses said the massive crowd of more than 300 people had gathered for a Juneteenth celebration that turned violent.
In an update later on Sunday morning, the DuPage County Sheriff's Office said at least 20 people had been shot, one fatally. At least one person is in critical condition, while the others suffered 'graze wounds.'
'It was supposed to be like a Juneteenth celebration; we just started hearing shooting, so we dropped down until they stopped,' witness Markeshia Avery said. 'They just kept going. After that, we literally scattered away.'
Emergency services responded to the shooting outside the Willowbrook shopping center in Illinois after gunfire erupted during an illegal street takeover attended by at least 300 people overnight.
A massive police presence remained on the scene at 5:30 a.m. and are investigating. No arrests have been made and no further information has been released.

Strange. I don’t remember ANY Columbus Day shootings. There were parades and festivals, but no shoot-em-ups. Columbus Day is being eliminated, and Columbus statues are being torn down.
Enter Juneteenff. As long as I can remember, there have been shootings on Juneteenff. Seems to be a culture thing. But Juneteenff has been elevated to the status of a national, compulsory, holiday, complete with parties at the huge letters “BLM” painted on the streets.
Must be a cultural thing. Too bad the culture being worshiped is the one that blames everyone else for its self-inflicted pathologies.
Why can't they write, "Black violence erupts across the nation"?
"Let's celebrate our emancipation from slavery!"
"We could use this occasion to demonstrate to ourselves and others how civilized we are and how deserving we are for a place in the modern world."

I live 15 minutes from this location and drive by it at least once a month on my way to Oak Brook.
300 people at that location in the wee hours of the morning is t a “celebration” it’s a riot.
I’ve no sympathy for people that shoot each other in “celebration” of being set free from slavery.
Go back to Chicago.
Sorry, but my inherent white privilege prevents me from giving a rats ass about black people shooting and killing each other while celebrating a holiday about blacks killing each other.
Maybe they should just eliminate Juneteenth as a holiday. Never had it when I was a kid & never missed it any, either. As I recall, when I was a kid, I believe you could walk down at least some Chicago streets without worrying about being shot at as well. So, what has having Juneteenth accomplished? Seems to me that we need a holiday FROM shootings; not one ADVOCATING it.
