Russian attack helicopters gain upper hand on key southern front, says UK MoD

Russia is using attack helicopters equipped with long-range missiles to gain an upper hand on the key southern front of the Ukrainian counter-offensive, according to Britain’s Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Moscow has deployed more than 20 extra helicopters to Berdyansk airport, which lies approximately 100km behind the front line, since Kyiv launched its offensive earlier this month, the ministry said in an intelligence update.

“In the constant contest between aviation measures and counter-measures, it is likely that Russia has gained a temporary advantage in southern Ukraine, especially with attack helicopters employing longer-range missiles against ground targets,” said the MoD.

It indicated earlier in the week that the Russian air force had been “unusually active over southern Ukraine”, which is at the centre of a counter-offensive as Ukraine hopes to sever Russia’s land corridor between annexed Crimea and eastern Donetsk.

The daily sortie rate remains much lower than at the start of the invasion, when Russia was flying up to 300 missions a day, the MoD said. But Russia has increased its use of air-to-surface weapons that allow attack aircraft to remain well away from their targets.

In particular, reports suggest that Russian attack helicopters are operating close to the front lines in the south and could pose a serious threat to the Ukrainian counter-offensive.

One Ukrainian commander who spoke to The Guardian near the front line in Zaporizhzhia described “constant attacks from helicopters, three or four times a day”, saying his brigade had no effective way to shoot them down from the ground.

So there’s that.

Both sides seem to say the Russian helicopters are having success flying against ground targets; Ukrainians having difficulty shooting them down.

Seems like the Ukrainians are on the offensive now, so their air defense systems are not as mobile, that's my understanding.

In before the “You’re a Putler” retards

This war is a no Brainerd. That's why this is a bipartisan issue. That said, we shouldn't give Zelensky a blank check. I think that's about it. We should arm Zelensky but at some point we need to encourage him to negotiate and save lives on both sides.

There was and remains nothing wrong with Ukrainians defending themeselves against Putin’s aggression.

Russians themselves are not eager to invade another country.

No, Russia didn’t take what they want. Russia doesn’t control the entirety of any of the Ukrainian oblasts that Putin insanely claimed recently are now part of Russia. Russia’s army is digging in like scared rabbits in the face of Ukrainian army and leaving “Russian land” in the control of Ukraine.

Why does the biggest country in the world have to “lay back and wait” in a battle against Ukrainian “farmers and miners”

Perhaps Russia has taken all the ground they wanted to take, have now established entrenched defenses and are now allowing the Ukrainians to go on the offensive and expose their forces.

Bleed us dry? The US Army has 5000 Abrams tanks.

There was talk about the latest 'aid' packages getting sent to Ukraine requires those supplies actually be procured and produced. They wouldn't arrive until the fall/winter.

The defense contractors are happy go be long on this conflict. Have to fleece the American people while the Ukrainians get to bash their forces against a wall of defense and air support.

Not only are every Ukrainian expendable, so is every American not part of the ruling NeoCon/Deep State “elite”.

Deployments will probably begin in the next 2-3 months. The draft will follow that.

An Alliance with a post Soviet free Christian Russia would be in everyone’s interest, except Bolsheviks

Never forget that Russia, with a minuscule $65 billion annual military budget is kicking the wests arse with its $1.5 trillion annual military budget. The western military model and supply chain is no match for Russia, because our system is designed around the idea of perpetual war in the developing world and occasionally bludgeoning the third world and Middle East to maintain hegemony. The MIC is a danger to the world and the biggest grift ever, it’s not about “defence”, it’s about corrupt enrichment in exchange for political patronage. These Ukraine battlefield fiascos are finally exposing that.

It is obvious that they did not take all the land they wanted, why go to Kiev if you never intended to take it, with that said the spin will begin because Russia can’t take more land so Putin and his group are going to use your line, this is all we wanted…. Some kind of victory is necessary for their survival

Of course Till they want more, north Vietnam came to the table to buy time and it worked
Go ahead let Putin the aggressor have his victory, but me thinks you have written off the Ukrainians a bit early. The Russians fighting for every square in and not falling back to their “prepared” defenses makes no sense.

Let’s see what happens and how the air defenses go. Imagine there will be a lot fewer Russian helicopters over the next few weeks, and russian logistics are not looking good
My 2 cents and what the hell do I know
