Zelensky: Ukrainian loss could force US to choose between ‘collapse of NATO’ or war
The Hill via Yahoo ^ | June 15th, 2023 | Julia Shapero

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday that a loss to Russia could ultimately force the U.S. to choose between the “collapse of NATO” or going to war.

“If Ukraine would lose, if Russia would occupy Ukraine, Russia will continue going towards Baltic countries, Poland, etcetera,” Zelensky said in an interview with NBC News. “And they will start war with one of the NATO countries, and at this moment, the U.S. would have to choose the collapse of NATO or go to war.”

The Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are all members of NATO, as is Poland. An attack on any member of the alliance is “considered an attack against them all” under the treaty organization’s principle of collective defense.

Zelensky brought up the possibility of NATO involvement in response to the suggestion from some Republican politicians that the U.S. needs to limit its spending on the war in Ukraine.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — a 2024 Republican presidential candidate — previously described the war as a “territorial dispute,” while arguing that the U.S. should not become “further entangled” in the conflict. Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) also warned last fall that a Republican majority in the House would not write a “blank check” to Ukraine for aid.

“Is any candidate or senator who thinks it costs too much for the United States to support Ukraine, is he ready to go to war, to fight, to send his kids,” Zelensky said Thursday, adding, “Because anyway, they will have to do this if NATO gets involved.”

“It’s not Ukraine against Russia,” he said. “Russia is fighting against the civilized world.”

>> Once NATO started bombing the crap out of Serbia, for reasons STILL not explained

Serbia is Christian. Kosovo worships satan (wearing the mask of allah). Clintoon/NATO were, and are, in the thrall of the mohammedans.

one can only assume all russian deployments are specifically set up with layered air defense assets vs nato in mind.

hopefully it is enough to deter washington. otoh there is this polish/baltic army occupation of western ukraine being talked about pretty openly now. some think some of the forced changes done in ukraine are to facilitate integration with poland.

Then why the hell do Californians vote overwhelmingly for the child-abusers who push that crap?

I’m not letting my kids go to save your ass, Zelensky.

at this point it is hard to see germany as anything but crate-trained. I don’t think they wanted this war at any point and have had their leaders go along with it, step by step, knowing it cripples them economically long-term.

Because they HATE Republicans more than they love their own children.

we had this situation with madeline albright too.

one can only assume that these people are in these positions because of their deeply held biases, and are in fact expected to pursue personal goals vs. whatever country did their ancestors allegedly wrong.

No doubt they’re ready, if not expecting NATO to attack, and we’ll be damn lucky if it doesn’t happen.

Our country is falling apart, going broke, and descending into totalitarianism and neocon idiots worry about a Slavic civil war 5000 mile away overseas. Neocons are the lowest form of life on this fair planet.

nato doesn’t seem to have an off-ramp in mind here, or even be looking for one.

but given the major economic processes at work in the US, why on earth would the administration try to avoid a very convenient war? One assumes the opposite is more likely true. they NEED this war, and are going to get it.

Your handle doesn’t convey the idea of a person who thinks things out and reaches prudential decisions. Nevertheless your point that delaying the inevitable can be valuable is actually valid. I’ll give two historical examples that support your position, and then consider the partition of Czechoslovakia.

At the beginning, the free and slave states of this country were not only equal in number, but also equal in population and wealth. Delaying the outbreak of hostilities until 1861, when the union states had six times the population and twenty times the wealth, served the purpose of securing a union victory. In a sense, by delaying the inevitable, Henry Clay, the Great Compromiser, enabled Abraham Lincoln to win the Civil War.

With regard to Hungary, in 1956, President Eisenhower’s decision to not intervene could be said to have been predicated on a trust that we, a free country, would outgrow the Soviet Union, a communist country so that we would, eventually and peacefully, win the Cold War. Today, Hungary is a free country, secure in its borders because of NATO expansion.

Now let’s consider Czechoslovakia in 1938. It’s pretty clear that Czechoslovakia in 1938 would have kicked the sh*t out of Nazi Germany. This was due to a combination of Czechoslovakia being strong for its size (see following link), and Germany still restricted by the Treaty of Versailles.

https://www.militaryhistoryonline.com/WWII/CzechExilesOfWWII

In addition, there is reason to believe that the generals would have overthrown Hitler had Czechoslovakia defended itself, something that would soon become impossible as Germany re-armed and the madness of victory spread through the country.

Again, delaying “the inevitable” is a very good strategy for free counties, because they tend to outgrow slave-based and heavily socialized countries. We, the U.S. and the NATO alliance, need never to start a war, but should adopt a policy of peace through strength, to prevent war.

I was following you until I reached this howler. Bottom line: Chamberlain gave Britain, the US, and Russia (this didn't seem to help France) an extra year to prepare for the upcoming war. We'll never know, but maybe Chamberlain's actions affected the outcome of the war.

And the actual NATO territorial border, not Ukraine, is where the line of course should have been drawn from the start.

Zelenskyy (and a bunch of FReepers) would have fit into this scene in “The Wind and the Lion” just fine:

Gummere:
You realize, of course, that if we fail in even the slightest way, we’ll all be killed?

Adm. Chadwick:
Yes, and the whole world will probably go to war.

Capt. Jerome, USMC:
Gentlemen, if we fail and are killed, I certainly hope the world DOES go to war! [raises glass as a toast]

Adm. Chadwick:
The world at war!

Gummere:
A world war? Now THAT would be something to go out on...
