Zelensky: Ukrainian loss could force US to choose between ‘collapse of NATO’ or war
The Hill via Yahoo ^ | June 15th, 2023 | Julia Shapero

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday that a loss to Russia could ultimately force the U.S. to choose between the “collapse of NATO” or going to war.

“If Ukraine would lose, if Russia would occupy Ukraine, Russia will continue going towards Baltic countries, Poland, etcetera,” Zelensky said in an interview with NBC News. “And they will start war with one of the NATO countries, and at this moment, the U.S. would have to choose the collapse of NATO or go to war.”

The Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are all members of NATO, as is Poland. An attack on any member of the alliance is “considered an attack against them all” under the treaty organization’s principle of collective defense.

Zelensky brought up the possibility of NATO involvement in response to the suggestion from some Republican politicians that the U.S. needs to limit its spending on the war in Ukraine.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — a 2024 Republican presidential candidate — previously described the war as a “territorial dispute,” while arguing that the U.S. should not become “further entangled” in the conflict. Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) also warned last fall that a Republican majority in the House would not write a “blank check” to Ukraine for aid.

“Is any candidate or senator who thinks it costs too much for the United States to support Ukraine, is he ready to go to war, to fight, to send his kids,” Zelensky said Thursday, adding, “Because anyway, they will have to do this if NATO gets involved.”

“It’s not Ukraine against Russia,” he said. “Russia is fighting against the civilized world.”

A stupid person cannot be ordered to stop being stupid. Only a stupid person would say such a stupid thing. So, grab hold of yourself.

Now, if it is possible, would you say why you think Germany in 1938, with an army of 1 million and no tanks, could have defeated Czechoslovakia with an army of 1.5 million and 400 tanks, had Czechoslovakia decided to fight rather than allow itself to be partitioned by other countries? And, again if it is possible, why were the German generals wrong in thinking an invasion of Czechoslovakia would have been premature in 1938? What were they missing that you are taking into account?

Do you think anytime a bully makes a threat, everybody else should just give in, and not fight. Or, in general terms, where should the brave and the free draw the line?

Notice that I’m NOT calling you stupid, but just the opposite. I’m giving you an opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and judgment in arguing that Neville Chamberlain didn’t make a disastrous mistake in agreeing to the partition of another country.

“Your words are pearls before swine. The Russian trolls won’t be swayed by logical arguments when they’re all in for a resurgent Soviet empire.”

This is because MeganC has deemed any patriot who supports an America First foreign policy, and is in opposition to support to Ukraine in their regional war against Russian aggression...is a Russian troll.

Because no rational person could possibly allow such suffering of the Ukrainian people.

In that world, strident adherence to RealPolitik and acting ONLY in US interests outside our borders is tantamount to treason.

It’s because THEIR loyalty is not to America, but to Ukraine, NATO and the EU.

So, that causes one to ask, just who is the traitor?

France had the largest standing army in the world in 1939-1940. It had what were supposed to be the most advanced weapons and it’s fortifications were an engineering marvel.

They lasted barley six weeks. And no French allies made any impact whatsoever, even those who shared a border, or were just across the channel from Dunkirk.

The Nazis then held a parade through the Arc in downtown Paris.

You got the right “decade” and the right continent. Now, focus more sharply: 1938 and Czechoslovakia.

But, on the subject of France and 1940, the tanks Germany got from Czechoslovakia (thanks to Chamberlain) were decisive in Germany’s victory over France two years later:

I choose "collapse of NATO", Alex. Why should we and NATO defend Ukraine's border and why should we go to war?

Besides, I don't see NATO defending our border even though we are under a full invasion, and we have a treaty with them. On the other hand, we aren't defending it either - so apparently nobody anywhere cares enough. There is that.

I find it very hard to believe that you are not a supporter of Russia...

No one cares what you believe.

I did two tours in Bosnia. Serbs were not the bad guys.

I noticed that, too.

Russia has a long history of doing just exactly that. We thought things changed with the fall of Communism. But the truth is that the old ugly nasty Russia is rearing its head. The slogans may of changed but it is still the most dangerous country in the world. It must be dealt with. Seeing it totally defeated and the cathartic change bound to happen especially if it is broke up could completely end Russia as an international bad boy. The countries around it joining NATO finally are a sure of that as well. I don't see why you and the others on the board can't see that.

Zelensky knows the exact words and phrases to say in order to trigger the NEOCON War hawks and the Democrat deep-pocket war lobbyists!!

For him, it is a win-win! We keep sending him money and weapons he keeps stashing some of the money (and sending some back to “the Big Guy”) and depleting the US stockpiles which waste OUR money (not his) and forces the Fed to spend, spend, spend...see the economy is GREAT!!!

“any patriot who supports an America First foreign policy.”

And look at where an American first policy got us back in the 30’s and 40’s.

“As opposed to what alternative policy?”

you can't be serious. You think letting fascists run wild is a good idea. People like you must of been completely surprised on dec 7th `1941.

An “America First” policy requires a strong military to back it up. It doesn’t mean we’re looking for “monsters to fight”.

Our military was crap in the 1930s, and that’s why “America First” ultimately failed.

“This is because MeganC has deemed any patriot who supports an America First foreign policy, and is in opposition to support to Ukraine in their regional war against Russian aggression...is a Russian troll.”

That’s nice. Now as for what I actually posted:

“Is patriotism in short supply on Free Republic? I ask as an awful lot of FReepers are vehemently anti-American these days.”

Mariner, are you anti-American? I never stated your name here and you really aren’t on my mind as an anti-American. So are you responding on behalf of someone else or can I ask why you’re personally offended at this comment?

You may not like it but there ARE people on this site who when asked to are utterly incapable of saying ANYTHING nice about America! That’s not even a political question here. Say something nice about Yellowstone. Maybe Bald Eagles. The striped bass in Minnesota are nice. The 1967 Mustang is pretty nice.

What about this site Free Republic? Is this a nice thing about America?

Why should it be such a challenge to say something nice about America on a site dedicated to the love of America?

Unless of course someone is vehemently anti-American and not the least bit patriotic.

And again I ask, is that you? If not (which is what I think) then why be offended when I call out those who are?
