You are correct on #2 (barring an occasional flash in the pan like a Scott Brown in Massachusetts or a Rudy Giuliani in NYC).
I think you're wrong on #1.
Republicans can't win statewide races in New Jersey -- and are facing increasingly long odds even in formerly Republican strongholds around the state -- for one reason: There has been a huge out-migration of Republican voters from New Jersey in recent decades.

Bad as Christie was, New Jersey Democrats are real pieces of work. Jim "flim-flam" Florio ultimately led to Christine Todd-Whitman, and she was an upgrade! The baseline in Jersey is a Tom Kean establishment type. Occasional you get a truly pro-life rep (Chris Smith), but mostly it is Keans and Whitmans. Christie was actually better than the baseline, but no need to take him national.
