How about a fact or two. The Imperial German Army recruited from the Ukraine. WWII saw the recruitment in the Ukraine of the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Galician) [Note: this was an German Army (Waffen) division taken into the SS - not recruited as SS as were the SS Totenkoph or Hitler Jugend divisions. The SS pulled Waffen divisions in as needed the make up numbers. SS was not controlled by WaffenAmt.] The end of WWII saw the 1st Galacian Div. become the 1st Div. of the Ukranian Army.
The SS recruited from everywhere including Western Europe. The best Red Army units were often Ukrainian. My wife’s two Ukrainian grandfathers fought the Germans. One was captured when Manstein took Crimea. The other fought from the Don River to Berlin.
