Ukrainian troops are probing Russian defenses as spring gives way to a second summer of fighting, and Kyiv's forces are facing an enemy that has made mistakes and suffered setbacks in the 15-month-old war. But analysts say Moscow also has learned from those blunders and improved its weapons and skills.
Russia has built heavily fortified defenses along the 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front line, honed its electronic weapons to reduce Ukraine's edge in combat drones, and turned heavy bombs from its massive Cold-War-era arsenal into precision-guided gliding munitions capable of striking targets without putting its warplanes at risk.
The changing Russian tactics along with increased troop numbers and improved weaponry could make it challenging for Ukraine to score any kind of quick decisive victory, threatening to turn it into a long battle of attrition.
U.S. Joint Chiefs chairman Gen. Mark Milley said in an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday that while Ukraine's military is well-prepared, as time goes on, "this will be a back-and-forth fight for a considerable length of time.”
Most attention last week focused on catastrophic flooding in southern Ukraine caused by the destruction of the Kakhovka dam that both sides blame on each other.
At the same time, however, Ukrainian troops have unleashed a series of attacks in several parts of the front that so far have made only marginal gains against multilayered Russian defenses.

Armor isn’t what it used to be. Both sides are losing armored vehicles at a high rate.
reality is that Russia is struggling to continue doing war.

I don’t see Vlad traveling the world begging for weapons, men, and money….I do see Artymovsk ( Bakmut ) fallen and the Ukies beginning offensive failing miserably….with hundreds of pieces of US Western equipment destroyed, for the whole world to see.
“Anyhow, Putin is going to send you to a gulag for not keeping up with his efforts or lack thereof. He’s counting on you, so, don’t fail him... or else.”
You’ve got blinders on. Ukraine is/will not get anywhere with their offensive. Many of the weapons the West (mostly the U.S.) has given them are getting destroyed, and their already decimated population of fighting age men (some women) are being further killed off. And the Ukrainian army doesn’t have the backup troops that Russia can muster.
At this rate, there will be generations of Ukrainian men that will all be dead, and it will be generations before they can be replaced. All this proxy war of attrition is getting is more dead bodies every day.
If Trump was President, there would be negotiations and an end to the fighting; under Biden this war will be an endless drain on our economy supporting the war effort (as Biden is being blackmailed by Ukraine to keep supplying the war effort because he and his son and his family are compromised by millions of dollars of payoffs to his crime syndicate family that Ukraine can blow the whistle on at any moment in time.
Our own munitions are being drawn down (including our strategic oil reserves) to the point that if China were to attack Taiwan, we would most likely lose (as will an invaded Taiwan) in short order. This is Biden’s legacy, endless war in Ukraine, weakness abroad, a coalition between China/Russia/Iran that no one wants, with India and Saudi Arabia no longer in our camp because they can’t stand/don’t trust Biden).
We will probably lose Taiwan to the ChiComs and won’t be able to do a thing about it. The lies of Ukrainian success, the lack of stats re their death count, paints a faux picture of what is really going on there, and the Biden regime propagandists continue to support this endless no win war effort because it suits their political needs for distraction from Biden’s failed domestic issues.
Shame on all of the pro-Ukrainian endless fighting machine supporters for destroying our own country’s military capabilities leaving us vulnerable to whomever wants at us. Fools all.
Shame on those broken and defeated “conservatives” who wish the misery and death of the filthy Russian World on Ukrainians. Reagan would roll over in his grave at such thoughts. Making Russia Great Again will never be in the interest of American conservatives.
In some respects you are right. But at least we have immigrants...who wants to move to Russia?
“Tell Putin that, he has absolutely no chance of winning, but do it nicely, or he’ll send you to a Siberian prison where you will never be heard from again. So, let him down easy, for your sake.”
There won’t be a Ukraine to save. All the men, both young and some old, will be dead and you will find out that at some point Ukraine/Russia will have to negotiate as Russia can fight for years and Ukraine can’t keep it up without us. At some point the people of this Country will be fed up and that time is very near with seeing all their tax dollars finance an endless war and at that time, if there is any Ukraine left, a deal will be cut. Get used to the idea, because that is what is going to happen, and calling people Pttuin lovers, who can see clearly what is happening over there rather than through propagandist eyes on both sides, won’t help your cause at all.
“Ukraine’s equipment is coming fro the U.S. and other European countries, and Russia cannot match them.”
Russia is being supplied with endless drones from Iran, getting supplies (both military and other) from China, North Korea, and others doing it under the table. The Ukraine/Russia war is indeed a proxy war with both sides being supplied by their allies. Russia will last as long as they want to last, and Ukraine will lose generations of their men dead by war.
“Reagan would roll over in his grave at such thoughts. Making Russia Great Again will never be in the interest of American conservatives”
Reagan negotiated with Gorbachev and got along with that Russian dictator very well. He caught more flies with honey. Trump is an excellent negotiator. Biden is a dolt.
Russia will last as long as they want to last, and Ukraine will lose generations of their men dead by war.
Moscow probably has a notion of how much of its conquest, it would give up.
But Ukraine has a notion of recovering all of what Russia has taken.
While the rest of Europe - plus supporting parties and other nations - have notions of there not being "a long war."
U.S. Sec'y of Defense Austin, made a mistake by declaring that Ukraine would recover Crimea. A claim that he cannot back up, while Russia remains willing to bombard for a long time.
Absent the ability to produce 12 or more main battle tanks a week in Ukraine, and absent the ability to produce the missiles, anti-armor weapons, field artillery, and TOURNIQUETS needed every week . . . Ukraine continuing to try and recover all the land that was lost to Moscow's reckless and thoughtless conquests, will be backing itself into a corner from which it will be forced - by its un-acceptance of its present position: being fortunate and thankful to retain what it now has - to, at some point int he future, having to sue Russia for peace - MEANING: giving up more territory to Russia.
Ukraine underestimates the treachery of the leftist-socialists that make up the administrations of some "western countries" including the Biden Administration plus deceptive ministrations by absolutists such as Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and other "green" and "color revolutionary" Stalinist- "progressives."
Good post. Interesting.
WAR IS A GRIM TEACHER but Russia has learned and improved with each set back. Each week they become more professional and better. Now they are on defense and Ukraine will have a fight on their hands. Napoleon taught them about massed artillery and this has helped them a great deal. If the offensive fails or stalls —Russia will win. Only a NATO intervention will stave off defeat.
Yes the current influx of immigrants is the cream of the crop. Sometimes less is more you know...
300,000 to 500,000??? Where are you getting these numbers???
“At the end of the war, Russia will still be a very poor country, and Ukraine will have a much easier time to recover via the help of the U.S. and Europe and many other countries.”
So our taxpayers pay for this proxy war and then pay again through the nose to rebuild Ukraine, and it won’t be much from “many other countries”. It will be U.S. taxpayer dollars that will be used to rebuild Ukraine if the Dems and RINOs have any say in the matter. Hopefully the Dems will be out of office by that time; that is if Biden doesn’t start WWIII which he will if backed into a corner as to his corruption and crimes. That’s when he will start a nice distracting WWIII. I’m sure you are looking forward to this.
