I have often commented that the chaotic and inconsistent decision making by politicians who were “following the science” didn’t make sense, and neither did a “warp speed” development of a new immunization technology, certainly not after the Diamond Princess and USS Theodore Roosevelt outbreaks in February and March 2020 told us almost all we needed to know about epidemiology, morbidity, and mortality of the novel coronavirus.
It WAS necessary to practice reasonable containment measures, and it was a good idea to work on a vaccine - but not to do either as if the world was ending.
The only reason that rapid termination of the pandemic became of critical importance to US and European leadership was if they knew something we didn’t - and now we know what they knew. And it’s a tell that countries not locked into an incestuous relationship with Western Big Science did not, for the most part, act as if the sky was falling. India and Brazil are two prominent examples.
If the pandemic could have been ended by “social distancing”, or by “masks”, or “lockdowns”, or mRNA vaccines - over by the Summer of 2021 - then no one would ever find out what really happened, and by June 2023 the Times would be publishing wry commentary along the lines of “Oh yes, that COVID thing in the Spring of 2020! Amusing! Wonder what it was all about?”
It’s true that political leaders became drunk with power, and some of them - Arden (NZ) and Trudeau (Canada), and others liked it much too much - but they were responding to inputs from the Wellcome Trust in the UK and the NIAID in the US, and those people, some of whom I know personally, do not panic and do not scare easily. They don’t, that is, unless they misunderstand the situation (unlikely) or unless there’s something that’s scaring them that’s not known to their political leaders or to the public at large.
If you know the inner workings of Big Science - the power that its leaders have over tens of thousands of scientists and billions of pounds/dollars - an admission or a discovery that this was the result of lawbreaking (moving recombinant viruses overseas to escape the GOF ban) and then organized deception to cover it up would SERIOUSLY change the lives of the people involved.
The simple explanations are the best ones - pride goeth before a fall, and all that.

I was 54 when it hit and in excellent shape; 5’8” tall, weighed 135 lbs., was able to walk all 14 floors of the building I was managing (including the stairwells) every week without a problem.
Spent 2 weeks the summer before trekking across Italy.
Busy, active working wife and mom, ate healthy, lived clean.
Now I’m an incapacitated mess who can’t go around the block without being winded or at risk of passing out from POTS and will not live long enough to see grandchildren.
These scumbags took years off my life.
My son sent me a medical article that showed how degenerative neurologist disorders are on the upswing for COVID long-haulers.
