California Governor Gavin Newsom is proposing a 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to restrict gun ownership, following a record year of mass shootings.
The Democrat's plan would leave the 2nd Amendment unchanged and 'respect' America's 'gun-owning tradition'.
But he has demanded 'common sense constitutional protections and gun safety measures that Democrats, Republicans, independent voters, and gun owners overwhelmingly support'.
It would include 'universal background checks, raising the firearm purchase age to 21, instituting a firearm purchase waiting period, and barring the civilian purchase of assault weapons.'
All of those are hot political topics that have divided Congress as well as state legislatures. They haven't been able to clear Congress, where Republicans have successfully filibustered gun control measures in the past,
Last June, the House while under Democratic control passed a gun package to raise the age for certain gun purchases, limit the size of gun magazines, and codify 'bump stock' regulations. It died in the Senate.
A new amendment to the Constitution needs to be passed by a two-thirds in Congress or an application by two thirds of the states.
Courts have shot down many legislative gun remedies. Last year, the Supreme Court struck down a New York restriction limiting people who could carry concealed firearms in public, ruling people had the right to carry for self defense.
Those won't be the end of Newsom's proposed remedies. 'Additionally, the 28th Amendment will affirm Congress, states, and local governments can enact additional common-sense gun safety regulations that save lives,' said his release.

The 28th Amendment should read as follows.
‘All democrats, progressives, communists, leftists in general, are hereby banned from holding any public office in the USA from the smallest town to the Presidency.’
Now that would be a “common sense” amendment.
Don’t ban guns, ban leftists.
Undoing one of the guaranteed rights under the constitution, with a new amendment?
Why not introduce a new amendment, which will encompass all the wishes of the democrat party...
where that amendment would be for...
“Repealing the constitution; repeal of the bill of rights, and repeal government by the people, of the people and for the people”
And then democrats would be free to express their true wishes where they get to implement their communist agenda with no opposition whatsoever.
A new amendment to abridge or repeal the 2nd amendment wouldn’t be “unconstitutional” per se. The 18th amendment (alcohol prohibition) was repealed by the 21st.
With that said, there is ZERO possibility of 3/4 of states abridging or repealing the 2nd amendment. Newsom, as usual, is showboating, for attention. This isn’t a serious idea.
How about some common sense abortion restrictions? How about common sense border enforcement? How about common sense spending cuts?
No gun restrictions for the gunthugs who guard The California Hairdo, of course.

Common sense weapon ownership to me is “any registered democrat is not allowed to own a gun”.
