Wagner boss ‘afraid’ Russia may use nuclear weapons on its own territory
The New York Post ^ | June 6, 2023 | Snejana Farberov

The head of the Wagner mercenary group admitted that he is “afraid” Vladimir Putin may deploy nuclear weapons in a Russian border region that has been repeatedly raided by pro-Ukrainian rebels.

In an interview with the pro-Moscow Telegram news channel “Donbas Now,” the notoriously outspoken paramilitary leader aired his concerns about the chilling prospect of the Kremlin using tactical nuclear weapons on Russian soil.

“I’m afraid they might get the vile idea of throwing a small nuclear bomb on their own territory,” Prigozhin said, referring to the troubled Belgorod region on the border with Ukraine. …

“Isn’t it why we [Russians] are retreating in the Belgorod region, allowing Ukrainian forces to advance?” Prigozhin wondered. “Because throwing [a nuclear bomb] at a foreign territory is scary, but we can throw one at our own, show everyone that we are mentally ill knockouts.”

(snip)

Prigozhin described a scenario in which Kyiv’s soldiers would be stationed in some border village on Russian territory, and Moscow’s forces would blast them there with a tactical nuclear weapon.

But the Wagner chief, who has gained notoriety for launching scathing attacks at Russia’s top military leaders over their handling of the war, darkly joked that the nuclear attack might fail.

“It’s a big question whether the [nuclear weapon] would even function properly, seeing how they maintain the rest [of their equipment],” Prigozhin noted.

I wouldn't put it past Putin to do such a thing. But even Prigozhin wonders if any of Russia's nuclear weapons still work?

“nuclear weapons “

No matter where , no matter who ...it's not a good thing when we start hearing these words spoken.

As to weather any of the weapons work .....

I would rather not know ......

Yevgeny Viktorovich Prigozhin is a Russian oligarch, mercenary chief, and a close confidant of Russian president Vladimir Putin. Prigozhin is sometimes called “Putin’s chef”, due to owning restaurants and catering companies that provide services for the Kremlin.

Let ‘em nuke themselves.

It’s not our problem.

Fallout goes west?

No

What is the prevailing wind pattern across Europe?

In the tropical or lower latitudes winds move east to west and are called the Easterlies. In the mid-latitudes of North America, Europe and Asia, winds move west to east, naming them the Westerlies.

He's not the only one wondering. I've said many times I have my doubts Russia's nuclear weapons still function properly. Looking at the state of Russia's military, aging hardware, etc.. I can't imagine their nukes are in any better shape.

If we're lucky they'll blow up trying to launch and not make it out of their silo's or blow up shortly after launch due to fuel leaks/whatever.

Anyone here have any informed thoughts on just how tolerant nuclear weapons are of neglect and skipped maintenance? Or the chances Russia skimped on this post Soviet breakup due to corruption?

This is stupid - written by the same people who said Putin blew up his own pipeline?

NATO wants WWIII and a nuke would be their initial move.

Does Putin owe these guys money or something? I don't know much about mercenaries, but I'd always imagined they would refrain from constant public criticism of their employers. Every time I read about Wagner, their head is criticizing Putin or the Russian army.

If you nuked your own border and take some of Ukraine with it, you have a 30-40 year no man’s land which neither country dare cross. Instant North/South Korea but no more weapons or troops to protect the border. At that point it becomes who is economically stronger to survive all of this.
