Russia says it thwarted major Ukrainian offensive, killed hundreds

MOSCOW, June 5 (Reuters) - Russia said on Monday that its forces had thwarted a major Ukrainian offensive at five points along the front in the southern Ukrainian region of Donetsk and killed hundreds of pro-Kyiv troops.

It was not immediately clear whether or not the reported attack represented the start of a Ukrainian counteroffensive which Kyiv has been promising for months to recapture territory taken by Russian forces after the invasion of February 2022.

Russia's defence ministry said Ukraine had attacked with six mechanised and two tank battalions in southern Donetsk, where Moscow has long suspected Ukraine would seek to drive a wedge through Russian-controlled territory.

"On the morning of June 4, the enemy launched a large-scale offensive in five sectors of the front in the South Donetsk direction," the defence ministry said in a statement posted on Telegram at 1:30 a.m. Moscow time (2230 GMT).

"The enemy's goal was to break through our defences in the most vulnerable, in its opinion, sector of the front," it said. "The enemy did not achieve its tasks, it had no success."

Reuters was unable to immediately verify the Russian statement and the Ukrainian defence ministry and military did not immediately respond to written requests for comment.

Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov published a cryptic message on Twitter on Sunday, quoting Depeche Mode's track "Enjoy the Silence".

"Words are very unnecessary They can only do harm," his tweet said.

Ukraine last week published a flashy video depicting troops preparing for battle and reciting a rousing blessing, which was later aired as a recruiting clip.

Russia's defence ministry released video of what it said showed several Ukrainian armoured vehicles in a field blowing up after being hit.

The “heavy cost” is zillions of dollars of US money.

Sometimes the “meat grinder” is located within cities… sometimes the meat grinder is in open fields within full view of enemy forces located in well fortified defensive positions.

He's infected with the same effeminate self-indulgence and lack-of seriousness we see here in the United States.

Your people are dying by the hundreds every day, and all you can do is quote 80's New Wave synth-pop?

Given that Pelosi, Biden, etc, are all tied at the hip with Zel via their public statements, visits, funding support, etc, if Reuters (who along with a few like AP, Newsweek, etc, are all Biden/Ukraine cheerleaders) puts this out, you can take it to the bank this almost certainly occurred as it’s rare to see them stray from Ukraine cheerleading.

Mindless slaughter. Get the two sides to the bargaining table before Ukraine is reduced to a moonscape.

If Lindsey Graham is a gung-ho backer of a continued war, that should be proof enough that it’s destined to be a total disaster.

Yet, you apparently believe the Biden regime. That's what is laughable about you neocons when you make comments like this.

"Ukraine would seek to drive a wedge through Russian-controlled territory"

That, Ukraine cannot do. Because Ukraine does not have the mobility from the combination of logistics, vehicles, and maintenance, with which to sustain recovered territory.

Ukraine does not [yet] have rolling bombardment capability. That is why, Ukraine needs thousands of trucks, each with one of:

- mortar
- rocket launchers (a system of at least 3 tubes)
- SPG-9

Many such vehicles will be lost; thus, the need for thousands plus the logistics and maintenance trains with the necessary mobility, in support.

Russia presently has many thousands of drones by which to monitor the battle areas - flying grids of drones, in effect, that can pinpoint hundreds of Ukraine positions and vehicles in an instant.

Ukraine does not have the anti-airborne-drone systems that Ukraine needs, to upset that Russian airborne grid. Ukraine needs anti-airborne-drone -type gun systems using advanced hi-power shot-shells (with greater range than shotguns) for ammunition. Smaller scale but similar to the German Gepard:

Ukraine does not have the numbers of shotguns that it needs, for troops to blast closer drones out of the sky. Too many Ukraine troops lack the training to trap shoot. Some troops can hear a drone, but too few have a simple cone to hold up to their ear, by which a drone could be accurately located. (You can create a cone by simply cutting of the bottom of a 1 - 2 litre water bottle.)

In general, support for the front, has to move with the front. Support for a spearhead has to move with the spearhead - but Ukraine does not have that nor the capability to sustain flank support for a spearhead.

but tempered a forecast of success with a warning that it could take some time and come at a heavy cost

Probably not worth the cost in lives of potentially hundreds of thousands Ukrainians. The best move might be is to settle for a cease fire. Continue to build up their defense forces. They need to focus on building the nation of Ukraine.

The vaunted Ukrainian offensive is said to be composed of 9 - count’em 9 - brigades. Big f’ing deal! Sure, maybe if lucky they could give the Russians a bloody nose, but Russia is bleeding Ukraine dry. No way that Ukraine comes out of this with any kind of a win.
