Fentanyl Voted as Schedule 1 Drug, Vote Passes House of Representatives

Congressman David Valadao voted for H.R. 467, the Halt All Lethal Trafficking of Fentanyl Act.

The legislation was passed by the House of Representatives, in hopes of permanently placing Fentanyl-related substances into Schedule 1 of the Controlled Substances Act.

Schedule 1 is the strictest level of control placed by the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Some may believe that this won't make any changes.

Elizabeth Guillen, a woman who lost her 21-year-old son, Christopher Estrada, back in August 2022 after he overdosed on Fentanyl, said there’s no point in having this vote passed.

“If they make it a schedule 1 drug, what's the whole point of it? I think there should be a stronger legislation to remove it instead of trying to make it like a part of society,” she said.

Guillen believes that one of the best ways to stop this from continuing is by getting it off the streets and from the hands of people using and selling it.

“Trying to get it off the streets, trying to find the suppliers, trying to find the dealers, trying to find the people who have an issue with the addiction itself, manufacturers, things like that,” said Guillen. “I don't think making it a schedule 1 drug is going to stop any kind of problem with it, if anything it's going to make it bigger.”

Guillen says acknowledging it as a legal drug makes it the problem.

Several reports show that disposable vapes are being laced with Fentanyl.

“I heard recently that they were putting it in Marijuana, they are finding it in products that we use,” said Guillen.

Congress actually got something functional done? I’m shocked.

Pointless. No matter what or how you designate the drug, it’s still coming in through the southern border. Seal the border and the issue goes away.

How about illegals as a Schedule 1.

Exactly right - the border is open so it’s going to keep coming in like a river.

Congress = Paper pushers.

Do nothing about enforcement of laws.

Its prescribed as a pain killer for chronic pain, and post surgery pain.

I don’t think it’s functional. It won’t help the problem, but it may cause a lot of problems with the many legitimate uses of Fentanyl.

Does nothing but scare doctors and keep meds from those in chronic pain. Addicts cause pain and suffering far beyond their own filthy circle of dope fiends—the unintended consequences of their selfish behavior.

Fentanyl is an amazing pain killer. Used initially in anesthesia, we used it for pain control and during procedures all the time in the ER. Very effective and best part was very short acting. If I needed to I could reverse the patient with narcan and. Not worry the patient would “ rebound” after the narcan wore off. This is a stupid pointless dog and pony show. The fentanyl on the street isn’t diverted legal drug.

National Cancer Institute, NCI Dictionary of Cancer Terms: fentanyl citrate: "A drug used to treat severe cancer pain that occurs even though the patient is already taking opioids."

Another law should fix things.

In other words: There is no problem that Congress can’t make even worse.

The Law of Unintended Consequences:

Now actual human beings in real pain will just have to suffer through it. Bite a stick, patients.

Why not just declare the US a Fentanyl-free zone? It works for drugs near schools and guns, right? This will just make people who legitimately need fentanyl for pain control suffer more. Stupid and pointless.

These laws inconvenience legitimate medical use. I had a friend way back in college who had a little vial of cocaine amongst his possessions. He also had a gaping cavity in a back molar that desperately needed to get repaired but he was waiting for his student health/dental insurance to kick in. In the meantime, after meals in the mess, he’d moisten his finger, jam a little coke down the rotten tooth hole, wait for it to kick it, and then brush it out best he could. He only used that coke for the above procedure and eventually saw a dentist.
