Skip to comments.Debt limit crisis: How three Republicans could make McCarthy's life difficult this week

Despite striking a deal with President Joe Biden, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's (R-CA) week could be made difficult by three powerful Republican colleagues.
As part of his campaign to secure the speaker's gavel earlier this year, McCarthy promised changes to the House Rules Committee, or "the speaker’s committee" — a pledge that was pivotal to him gaining the votes of Reps. Chip Roy (R-TX) and Ralph Norman (R-SC), who were among the last holdouts. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) was also given a seat on the committee.
Now, those same three additions are in a position to hold up a vote on the debt deal by refusing to support it for floor consideration.
The House Rules Committee is made up of appointees from the House speaker and minority leader, and the committee determines which bills to schedule for consideration on the floor. The committee currently seats nine Republicans and four Democrats, and with all four blue members voting against the bill, three conservatives could sink the plan.
Roy and Norman, both members of the House Freedom Caucus, have already been critical of the deal, with Norman calling it "insanity" in the final stages of negotiations.
Roy tweeted on Monday “that it was explicit both that nothing would pass Rules Committee without AT LEAST 7 GOP votes - AND that the Committee would not allow reporting out rules without unanimous Republican votes.”

The House Freedom Caucus has a press conference set for tomorrow, likely to announce their opposition.
Chop Roys used to be in my district. He is one of the good ones.
Hang tough Freedom Caucus.
Chip Roy should be speaker. He endorsed DeSantis.
You may know but for others who don’t, Ron DeSantis was one of the original founding member of the House Freedom Caucus. Here’s his statement from earlier today...
I expect the Republicans to cave. That is what Republicans do.
How do we know the dims will not vote for this betrayal?
This appears to be a plan to block it in committee before it gets to the full floor for a vote.
99.9999% chance they won’t.
Because they are Republicans, the party with spine problems.
Looks like they’re setting up the Freedom Caucus. Look for McCarthy to go full Paul Ryan and blame the holdouts for a potential default.
That's at 12 PM EST, 11 AM CST, 10 AM MST, 9 AM PST
There will be no default. That is a lying scare tactic used by the Swamp of both parties.
Why should any patriot vote for this? What have we won?
Or it could be, the true conservatives are setting up the phony conservatives like McCarthy and Trump to further expose themselves by having to show their support for out of control big spending government.
Trump likes to act like he's willing to go to extremes to get his way, but this would be the true conservatives one upping him on that by an order of magnitude.
If the GOPe caves as expected it may finally mean that the party will collapse once and for all thankfully. The GOPe did nothing when Trump was president and they barely won last year as the ‘red wave’ never materialized. All this Trump/DeSantis stuff is a moot point if there is no congress that isn’t uniparty. Time to start over, maybe a decade of pure communism might wake people up.
Of course they’ll cave like good little Jr Democraps.
“ The House Freedom Caucus has a press conference set for tomorrow, likely to announce their opposition”
The nation cannot be saved until the GOP is destroyed.
This is a step in the right direction.
