Kevin McCarthy says debt-limit deal ‘closer’ but ‘not today’

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy expressed optimism Saturday about sealing a deal to raise the federal debt ceiling before the nation reaches its borrowing limit June 5.

“I feel closer to an agreement now than I did a long time before,” he told reporters as he arrived at the US Capitol Saturday morning, after a marathon negotiation session that ended at 2:30 am, hinting that the final language could be completed within hours.

McCarthy is not done caving yet. He’ll get some meaningless concession, but Dems will essentially get everything they want, including student debt giveaway.

McCarthy should have refused to do anything more than the bill the House already approved. The ball was in the Senate and instead of forcing them to take up the issue, he let Biden bully him into renegotiating with the House.

Since they’re not ready with the deal here, why hasn’t McCarthy taken up braces? The legislation rejecting ATF regulation of braces came out a committee quite some time ago, yet he hasn’t brought it to the floor for a vote. Why not?
