The new USS Canberra will be the first American navy warship to be commissioned in an allied country, with the combat vessel set to join the US fleet.
Australian navy chief Vice Admiral Mark Hammond said July's historic event would show the deep ties between the United States and Australia, and provide an opportunity to reflect on their shared history.
"This is a unique demonstration of respect by the US for the officers and sailors of the Royal Australian Navy," the vice admiral said.
Members of the US Navy and USS Canberra crew will be hosted in Sydney to mark the occasion.
It is the second US ship to bear the name Canberra after former president Franklin D Roosevelt renamed a Baltimore-class heavy cruiser in the 1940s after a valiant effort from the Australian navy's HMAS Canberra during the Battle of Savo Island in 1942.

Sorry to report that USS Canberra (LCS-30) is an Independence-class littoral combat ship of the United States Navy.
Used to be cruisers that were named after cities.
So... it’s all metric.
There is already a USS Winston S Churchill destroyer and it navigation officer is always a Royal Navy officer on exchange.

i can’t believe they’re still building those things ... i thought their transmission was unfixable ... not to mention, that they’re almost a complete failure regarding several of the major capabilities they were supposed to have been designed for ...

I despise stories of the sort which omit pics.
Although it might be unusual I can fully support this...as another sign of the deep friendship between the US and Australia.

One of my pet peeves is the way naming protocols for US Navy ships have gone out the window. In the past, you knew from the name what kind of ship it was. Now, names are all over the place. Ships like the LCS would normally be named after people who had served in the armed forces. Instead, you have service members, politicians, cities, and the ideal of independence. Naming ships after politicians bugs me the most. Who cares if they fought the Battle of Capitol Hill? I think there should be a rule that no ship(or anything else related to the Federal government)can be named after someone who served primarily as an elected or appointed official until they have been dead for at least 100 years. That way, real heroes can be recognized before politicians.
The 128th Infantry of the 32nd Infantry Division (Wisconsin Army National Guard) adopted “Waltzing Matilda” as its marching music after its experience in Australia, New Guinea and Luzon in World War II.
I proudly marched to it as a young soldier…many, many years ago.
