Donald Trump Megadonor Abandons Him As He Predicts Collapse in Support
Newsweek via MSN ^ | 22 May 23 | Ewan Palmer

A top GOP donor who previously backed Donald Trump has announced that he will be supporting Ron DeSantis in the 2024 Election.

Hal Lambert, founder and CEO of Texas-based Point Bridge Capital, said he wants to "do a lot to help DeSantis win" amid strong speculation the Florida governor will confirm his presidential campaign in the coming days.

Lambert, who set up an exchange-traded fund named after the former president's Make America Great Again 2016 campaign slogan, MAGA ETF, and previously served on Trump's inaugural committee in 2016, told the New York Post that he decided to back DeSantis after meeting with him and wife in Florida three weeks ago.

Lambert said he was also put off by Trump's recent CNN town hall, where the former president continued to falsely claim the 2020 Election was "rigged."

"What voters who didn't vote for Trump in 2020 are going to vote for him this time based on his performance? I don't think anyone will," Lambert told The Post. "We can't talk about things from four years ago that can't be changed.

"Trump is going to have a difficult time winning the general election. The election won't be about Joe Biden's bad record. It will be a referendum on Trump instead."

It is reported that DeSantis will file paperwork declaring his presidential candidacy on May 25 to coincide with a donor meeting in Miami, before a formal announcement a few days later.

DeSantis signed a bill legalizing abortion. That is a FACT. He is pro-murder. Plenty of other states have outright banned it. Enjoy Jeb! Jr. and his murderous thirst for killing babies.

Xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Let’s see, billionaire “borrows” trump’s campaign slogan & creates the MAGA ETF, the jumps ship based on a CNN town hall & meetin desantis.

He must have seen desantis is for sale?

“... Democrats and MSM will focus 100% of the time on Trump’s legal problems and 0% of the time on Biden’s disaster...”

Of course they will. Just like the democrats and the MSM lied about Trump 24/7 and Trump won both elections. The second time Trump got more votes than any other incumbent president in American history after being told 24/7 by the MSM and democrats that Trump was a traitor and Russian asset. Now, how does that fit in with your assertion?

“...then assuming he does, he will have really hard time serving out his 4 years assuming he’s convicted in any of the 3 criminal cases.”

Assuming???

In other words, surrender to the democrats now and let them choose the Republican challenger. You are a real fighter. Yes sir. Now, of course, you would like that because you are a DeSantis-bot, knowing that DeSantis is counting on the democrats to stop Trump because he knows he cannot.

The one real difference in my scenario is that in 2016 and 2020 Trump had not been convicted of a crime and facing a civil judgement over rape.

As I have repeatedly said, the charges are all bogus, but they are still charges and will do nothing to attract new voters that will need to win.

Everyone assumed Trump was going to win in 2020, he did not, so it’s not guaranteed he wins in 2024, you can claim cheating all you want and that is true, doesn’t change the fact that Biden is POTUS.

Fighting to win doesn’t mean you go running into a war without everything you need to win, a candidate convicted of crimes is not preparing to win.

Regardless of what hard core Trump supporters think, this will be a major theme in the primaries and general election.

Let’s get it right. The fear is that the media will ignore Biden’s record and make the election a referendum on Trump. And the feckless GOP will do nothing to prevent that.

“The one real difference in my scenario is that in 2016 and 2020 Trump had not been convicted of a crime and facing a civil judgement over rape.”

Trump was not convicted of a crime nor was he convicted of rape. It was a civil case, not a criminal case, and, of course, will be overturned, according to all the legal experts.

“As I have repeatedly said, the charges are all bogus, but they are still charges and will do nothing to attract new voters that will need to win.”

As one pundit observed, that case, where Trump was convicted without any evidence whatsoever, will inoculate Trump against all further charges in the public mind.

“Everyone assumed Trump was going to win in 2020, he did not...

So you actually believe that Biden got 81 million votes. That means you are too stupid to communicate with any further. Have a good day.

I think you are right about this: Trump is not convincing anyone new about the 2020 election. His base is as solid as it can be, but the objective is to win enough votes to defeat the fixers in 2024. That will take many new voters, and he will only inspire them by offering a positive alternative vision to the disastrous record of the Biden regime.

Typical leftwing gaslighting - take an unqualified success of the CNN townhall and spin it into a liabilty.

If you bothered to read the entire post versus throwing around insults, you would know that I agree with the idea that cheating happened, it doesn’t change the fact that Trump is not POTUS and Biden is. Trump is facing criminal charges in NYC, the chances of him getting a fair trial are probably zero, meaning a conviction is almost certain.

The same thing would apply to a trial in Washington.

Again, I said the judgement involving rape is a civil charge not criminal.

My point, which your emotions get in the way of seeing, is you can’t have a candidate who is convicted of a crime and facing a civil judgement involving rape.

A sure-fire way to alienate voters is to nominate someone like that.

His guilt or innocence, or any nuance whatsoever, be damned.

This thinking is exactly why the nation is in the state it’s in.

No one is saying Trump can’t get the nomination. We’re all saying, including this donor, he’s got a snowball’s chance in hell of winning the general because of the choices he’s made to put his ego and grievances over policy and forward looking strategy.

And what I'm saying is that's wrong according to the polls which are reliable - at least right now it is. Trump has a pretty substantial 7 point lead over Biden head to head.

Being right doesn’t mean a thing if you can’t win so you should do everything you can to win. He’s doing everything he can to massage his bruised ego. He’s not trying to win. He’s accepted the terms the Dems have decided to fight on: Trump drama is the issue rather than policy. It’s pathetic he can’t see it. This is the same Free Republic that mocked and protested AlGore as a sore loser in 2000 yet too many can’t see the any mistakes in Trump. They are Trumpophiles and not America First, MAGA, conservatives. Where’s the accountability?

Apparently America's voters do not feel the same way as you do about it. I've heard Trump express policy positions on new/current issues supporting drilling and fracking, ending the war in Ukraine, securing the border, wanting to impose significant reforms on the Deep State, etc. These positions directly affect current issues for the American people.

Some of us including this donor, if you read his words, that Trump hasn’t been and isn’t going what he needs to do to win the general. Trump is forcing us to look elsewhere to Save America from another four years of Joe. It’s disappoint and frustrating. More so if you’re like me and don’t think DeSantis is the one.

Again, I and most Americans disagree with this donor according to the reliable polls I've seen (Big Data Poll, Trafalgar, Rasmussen).

There is absolutely no nuance if you are convicted of a crime even if the charges are totally bogus, which they are.

It’s a rhetorical question but will being convicted of a crime cause more or less people to vote for Trump ??

The only way to fight this if for the same issue to plague Biden or some other Democrat.

Ask yourself, where are all the local prosecutors investigating Biden like they are for Trump.

If some local prosecutor in a Red State charged Biden and members of his family with crimes, the uproar would be off the charts, it would also make Biden deal with the same issues as Trump or the Democrats could remove him as a candidate.
