Brutal Battle for Bakhmut Leaves Russia With an Uncertain Victory
The Wall Street Journal ^ | May 21, 2023 | By Yaroslav Trofimov and Matthew Luxmoore

The nine-month battle for the small Ukrainian city of Bakhmut effectively came to an end on Sunday, as Russian forces finally captured the last significant Ukrainian strongholds on its western edge.

While Kyiv disputes Russia’s claim of controlling all of Bakhmut, Ukraine’s top commander in the region, Col. Gen. Oleksandr Syrskiy, has acknowledged that his forces retain a presence only in an “insignificant” part of the city, even as they push ahead on its flanks.

Who has won and who has lost isn’t measured, however, in current control over the uninhabitable ruins that are left from Bakhmut, a once prosperous city of 70,000 people.

The answer will depend on the outcome of Ukraine’s planned offensive—which hinges, in part, on whether Ukrainian or Russian military capacity has been degraded more severely by the war’s bloodiest, and longest, battle.

A Ukrainian success would help justify Kyiv’s controversial determination to cling on to Bakhmut, despite horrendous losses and, at one point in late February and early March, almost having thousands of troops in the city encircled. Inversely, a failed offensive would validate Russia’s strategy of using the city to maul Ukraine’s best fighting units.

“It’s too early to judge the impact of the battle of Bakhmut on the war.” said Michael Kofman, director of Russia studies at the Center for Naval Analyses who visited Ukrainian troops in Bakhmut in February. “This will be clearer in hindsight.”

“Brutal Battle for Bakhmut Leaves Russia With an Uncertain Victory”

I think one can say that the loss for Ukraine was more brutal, considering that their best units were primarily defeated by a bunch of mercenaries.

If Ukraine had won we would be hearing what a glorious victory it was.

Have you ever noticed Zeepers have all kinds of stories and supposed real info about Russians, but we never hear about Ukraine losses or blunders.

Okay so the MSM is redefining winning and losing, and saying it’s up to the mythical Ukrainian planned offensive, which will be so far under resourced they have no hope of winning.

I’ve often said Russia will win the war of attrition.
Russia will send as many warm bodies as needed.
Ukraine has limited Warm Male Bodies to sacrifice.

Mostly convicts recruited from prisons in Russia. But the Ukrainians were not using their best fighters. Supposedly they are in reserves, resting and training for the upcoming counter-offensive.

Zelensky may be holding off the upcoming counter-offensive. Maybe delay it until next year. He asked for F-16s. Now he's getting them.

Nothing has amused me more than to watch the Putin lovers on FR swoon every time they believe the Russians have been victorious.

Of course not. Zelensky is trying to keep the morale high for his country. That's why we do not need to hear about the casualties his army is taking (I'm guessing 100,000 dead so far).

Russia isn't the Soviet Union from WWII and they no longer have unlimited warm bodies. While no one was paying attention Russians have been immigrating to the US en-masse since the 1980s.

No. But they have more than Ukraine. Their goal is to fight Ukraine in a war of attrition until Zelensky agrees to concessions and Putin gets to go home as a "winner".

Battlefield victories is always “uncertain” to globalists like the WSJ. After all their side usually loses battlefield engagements.

Why don't you compare video of what Prighozin actually said, which is that Wagner is withdrawing from Bakhmut in a few days, with video of Ukrainian soldiers on a combat patrol in Bakhmut at the same time.

You can decide for yourself what the situation is.

Prighozin speaking, reportedly from somewhere in or near Bakhmut

A Ukrainian combat patrol in Bakhmut at the same time.

While I do not have a dog in this hunt, Rus vs, Uke, it certainly brings back memories of the WWII battles in Burma and the entire chain of islands stretching almost to Australia...

Loss after loss after loss after loss after loss after loss after loss after loss after loss after loss after loss after loss after loss after loss after loss after loss after loss and, finally, victory...

This current war is, sort of, like watching two out-of-shape drunks fighting outside a dingy bar...
Only bystander fools would get involved...

Yeah they will run out of their own bodies but the rulers of Europe and America will start sending other bodies to augment Ukraine’s dwindling population.

Uncertain? There is a reason why Zelensky did everything he could to hang on to it.

The Russians should have no problem clearing and liberating the rest of Donbass. Finally, those in Donetsk City and Lugansk can live in peace without constantly be targeted by the Ukrainian bastards that wanted to wipe them off the earth.
