When the police fail to protect the citizenry, vigilantism is the inevitable response. Self-defense is not only a natural, God-given right, it is an imperative that drives behavior, even in the face of adverse consequences. The well-publicized arrest of Daniel Penny for protecting fellow subway passengers in New York City did not deter passengers on Chicago’s’ Blue Line subway at Grand Station from forcibly subduing an apparently deranged man, who apparently had turned violent.
The embedding function has been disabled, so you will have to go here and click through the warning of “potentially sensitive content” to see the video from which the screengrabs below were taken. A voice can heard on the Twitter video of the incident, saying, apparently to one of security guards, “He hit her.”
It is most striking that a number of people wearing vests and in uniform can be seen standing by doing nothing, as a couple of passengers took action, forcing the shirtless man to the floor of the station.
One of the bystanders used an arm lock that has been inaccurately described as a “chokehold” in Mr. Penny’s case.
There is no indication that I have been able to find of an arrest of anyone -- the deranged man or Samaritans. The fact that all parties involved are African American may have something to do with it, as well as the fact that no permanent injuries can be observed.
I fear more such incidents are on the way to becoming the norm, as civil society continues to crumble and the law of the jungle comes to characterize Democrat-run cities.

Time to reopen the mental institutions.
Yeah but the hero is a black gentleman. Nothing to see here. Move along.
Hey Geraldo, there is a calling to reopen Willowbrook!
As a senior in HS (early 70s) we took a field trip to a state mental institution. The behavior that I saw there is the very same behavior that I have seen in person on the streets of Washington DC, Baltimore MD, Las Vegas NV, Los Angeles CA, etc.
SPJNK.
One of them appears to be trying to steal his shoes!
Uniformed officers are doing nothing possibly because of the Flloyd incident where the officer got 20 years. Don’t blame them at all. Some of these drug offenders have superhuman strength when high.
When did this happen?
Maybe I overlooked a date reference.
Right, for Democrat politicians.
Thank God white liberal 'elites' haven't noticed blacks who protect other blacks. When they do they'll work to put a stop to it. The 'elites' stock in trade is protecting evil and rubbing their boots into the faces of good people.
The goal of white liberal 'elites' is to create hell on earth for all of us normals... of all colors. It would be better for Thomas Lifson to ignore this issue.

Security may be legally barred from doing anything physical themselves.
In NY security guards for the most part are only allowed to defend themself and even then to a bare minimum.
Yes the kaw says you can defend others, in practice it’s just not worth it as YOU get arrested, the perp is let go and you get to play with the court system that treats you worse than the criminal and indeed rewards criminals now
I don’t tend to think of these acts in the face of violence and potential harm as vigilantism. I see it more as Good Samaritanism or old-fashioned heroism. To me, vigilantism happens when people feel someone or some several have gotten away with what ought to be punished (as when someone is acquitted on a technicality, for example), and then other people decide to impose punishment later. Vigilantism has a kneejerk negative connotation which we ought to resist using in inappropriate situations.
“Time to reopen the mental institutions.”
And put all Democrats in them.
The responses to this ought to be good.
If law enforcement won’t take action then citizens will have to. And criminals should realize that law enforcement theoretically is there to protect them from the citizenry. If all go vigilante it will be very bad for the criminals. Not that I am advocating that but....
The guards know that if something goes “wrong” they will face criminal charges (state AND Federal) and lawsuits.
