Russian mercenaries behind slaughter of 500 in Mali village, UN report finds
The Guardian ^ | May 20, 2023 | Jason Burke

Posted on 05/21/2023 9:25:20 AM PDT by Timber Rattler

First came a single helicopter, flying low over the marshes around the river outside the village, then the rattle of automatic fire scattered the crowds gathered for the weekly market.

Next came more helicopters, dropping troops off around the homes and cattle pens. The soldiers moved swiftly, ordering men into the centre of the village, gunning down those trying to escape. When some armed militants fired back, the shooting intensified. Soon at least 20 civilians and a dozen alleged members of an al-Qaida affiliated Islamist group, were dead.

Over the next five days, hundreds more would die in the village of Moura in the Mopti region of Mali at the hands of troops overseen by Russian mercenaries, according to a new United Nations report. All but a small fraction were unarmed civilians.

Published last week after an extensive human rights fact-finding mission conducted over several months by UN staff in Mali, the report gives an hour by hour account of events during a five-day military operation in Moura in March 2022, giving details of the worst single atrocity associated with the Kremlin-linked Wagner group outside Ukraine.

Investigators from the UN human rights office concluded that there are strong indications that more than 500 people were killed – the majority in extrajudicial killings – by Malian troops and foreign military personnel believed to be from Wagner, a mercenary outfit run by Yevgeny Prigozhin, a close ally of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, which was linked to the massacre by internal messages obtained by the Guardian last year.

The new allegations again underline the extent of human rights abuses blamed on Wagner, which has also operated in at least six other African countries as well as Libya and Syria.

This is an interesting and far-reaching subject. It could begin with a comparison of the Mali massacre with our very own My Lai. Slaughters of innocents has been endemic the world over, and by all combatant nations of which I have read. When one picks up a paint brush to color a subject, it should not be one which paints all with similar hues.

Having lived in Burkina Faso, a proclaimed Christian nation surrounded by Muslim countries, arriving hours after terrorists bombed the crew hotel, this story has little meaning to me. It’s hard to know if one should be shocked or thankful. I prefer conversion, but if they’re hell-bent on killing the peaceful...I’ve read the Old Testament. I was also a nurse and one doesn’t let cancer just grow without at least trying surgery.

Good.

Mercenaries. Gotta be troubled souls. They’d fight for anyone if the money’s right. We could outspend the Russians.

May sound sick but why not let them duke it out in Coliseums like they did in Rome? Poor slaves fighting for their freedom. Let them do it for prize money.

Oh I forgot. We have it here. It’s called the NFL.

Indeed. And that is a very short list.

One also finds: "Ukraine Admits Murdering 'Quite A Few' Russian Civilians Who Back Putin And His Invasion"

Pointing a finger is always dangerous, when it crooks back to one's self. Professor Rummel's book, "Power Kills" is a worthy read in this regard, as he coined the term "democide."

Timber, the liar, claims Bahkmut was an meaningless Russian victory. What Ukraine sacrificed there says otherwise. You and your ilk can't escape your lies:

https://sonar21.com/western-delusions-about-russia-and-ukraine-is-genuine/

But Ukraine paid a heavy price in blood in trying to hold onto that supposedly “worthless” city. Simplicius provides the details of the Ukrainian military obituary:

Why is Bakhmut called a Meat Grinder?
Who was decimated in Bakhmut:
Brigades:
45th Brigade
43rd Brigade
26th Brigade
28th Brigade
62nd Brigade
63rd Brigade
53rd Brigade
60th Brigade
24th Brigade
57th Brigade
30th Brigade
Advance Rubizh Brigade
Advance Azov Brigade
Advance Uragan Brigade
Advance Spartan Brigade
109th Brigade
116th Brigade
119th Brigade
241st Brigade
93rd Brigade
77th Brigade
46th Brigade
4th Brigade
17th Brigade
61st Brigade of Jaegers

Special Forces and Spetsnaz Regiments:
5th Assault Regiment 8th Regiment of Special Forces

Kraken Battalions:
122nd Battalion
68th Battalion
49th Rifle Battalion
15th Mountain Assault Battalion
Omega
Border Guard Donetsk

8th Regiment of the UDAR UAVs:
Shershen
Adam
Karlsen
Terra
Skala
Madyar
Khartia
Kep
Seneka

WASP Legions:
Dudaev Battalion
Georgian Legion
Mansur Battalion
Shamil Battalion
Gonor
Normandy Legion

Most of these battalions have suffered more than 70% casualties just against PMC Wagner.

The twenty five brigades listed above represents a force of atleast 50,000 men (assuming only 2000 men in a reduced brigade) and as many as 125,000. Simplicius also lists at least 9 battalions and 5 regiments — that is 4500 and 5000 additional troops respectively. Do the math. If Ukraine deployed 134,500 troops to the battle for Bakhmut, 70% casualties means that Ukraine suffered as many as 94,150 killed and wounded.

I’ve read some evaluations of the situation in Mali, since the military took over the country, they have been less and less discriminatory as they fight against Islamists. It’s been counter productive. The French, who aren’t picky, gave up trying to support them due to their brutality and the negative impact on the local population.

The Malian military turned to Wagner, who simply don’t care. But they are losing ground to JNIM, an AQ affiliated Malian/west African islamist group. The local people are tired of war and military brutality and turning to JNIM as they are the lesser evil. JNIM is also growing more and more capable as time passes. Conducting more complex attacks across multiple points in time and space. The Malian military is going to lose they war and JNIM will create an Islamic Caliphate in west Africa in less then five years.

Burkina Faso may also fall to them, but that is less clear as the population is less welcoming, but they JNIM is making movement across the country more and more difficult.

Try posting without the emotional childish insults.

The 101st is manning our 5th Corps European Headquarters and training at and manning positions facing the Ukrainian invasion by Russia and the enemy threat they are facing is Russia, not us and our NATO allies.

Let’s remember that the UN is the friendly face of coup. They propose to ‘help’ nations and instead insert ‘peace keepers’ to maintain the usurping ‘Leader’ as if legitimate, and those ‘peace keepers’ kill patriots trying to get the ‘new’ coup leader out.

So I don’t know what happened there - the mercenaries by definition, are for hire. Either Russia hired them or someone else. I wonder if Russia just had their Mai Lai massacre or the content you posted is completely distorted/fabricated, because that’s the kind of propaganda you post.

Really, who could believe anything you post after you’ve been lying for months about the Ukraine? Your Ukrainian propaganda supported this pointless war, loss of life and theft of tax dollars. I don’t believe you can have a conscience and post what you’ve been posting.
