Fact Check: New Mexico’s Democrat Gov. Claims an AR-15 Is an ‘Automatic Weapon’

CLAIM: During Friday’s airing of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) claimed an AR-15 rifle is an “automatic weapon.”

VERDICT: False. AR-15s are semiautomatic firearms.

Grisham made her comments during a discussion of the May 16, 2023, Farmington, New Mexico, shooting that left three people dead.

CNN identified the Farmington gunman as an 18-year-old male and noted his family had worried about his mental health. He used three different guns in the attack and was ultimately killed by police.

In '69 we qualified on both the M-14 and the M-16 during BCT. At the firing range they let us put the M-16 on 'auto' once. back then you could empty a clip with one pull of the trigger.But IIRC the M-16 will only fire 3 round bursts today.

And the AR-15 has no automatic capability.

Everybody knows that ar-15 owners grind down the sear as soon as they get home. Or, since a new round is chambered following firing a round, it’s automatic. And, of course, everybody knows that AR stands for automatic rifle.

A firearm isn’t a weapon unless it’s used to inflict or threaten harm against someone physically. A baseball bat isn’t a weapon if it’s being used to hit balls. From the early part of the last century Colt Automatic Pistols were advertised for sale. They were semi-automatic as opposed to fully automatic, but they were still advertised as “automatic”.

Cartridges for these pistols are still sold with the following designations in which “ACP” stands for “Automatic Colt Pistol: .25 ACP, .32 ACP, .380 ACP and .45 ACP.

Some of these Automatic Colt Pistol cartridges were subsequently used in automatic weapons that were fully automatic, but originally they were used in automatic weapons that were semi-automatic.

Bad part there is that the cowboys didn’t have automatic weapons either. They didn’t need them to shoot snakes or hunt game and they were too bulky and heavy for drives on horseback. They may have had a Gatling gun but that required a tripod or tied to wheeled carry. It was invented in 1861.

Some scholars consider the middle 1880’s as the start of the disappearance of the cowboy. They carried sidearms, generally colts, and the main rifles of choice were a Sharps for hunting and a Henry to kill predators. The first automatic weapon for the military didn’t come in till 1917.

There was also an M-14 that was select-fire semi-auto or full-auto. Designated M14A1 IIRC. LOTS of recoil in full-auto mode. Only got to shoot one once in basic. Fort Knox Ky. 1969. Went to Fort Polk for AIT, no M14s, M16s only.
