As a boy in the 1960s, I heard a visiting Polish great uncle describe Russian rule in rural south Poland after “liberation” from the Nazis as worse than rule by the Nazis. In essence, he said that the Nazis would steal but the Russians and communists would steal and then kill. Years later, as a retired farmer, he became a secret courier for Rural Solidarity and was beaten to death by the communist secret police.

I had an elderly Balt tell me pretty much the same thing. The big difference between Nazi & Russian Soviet\Communist oppression was the Communist required you to believe the oppression was good for you. The stealing and killing was in your best interests!
