The Ukrainian military and Russia's Wagner private army both reported further Russian retreats on the outskirts of Bakhmut on Thursday, as Kyiv pressed on with its biggest advance for six months ahead of a planned counteroffensive.
Ukrainian troops near the front line said Russia was bombarding access roads to slow the Ukrainian assault, which has shifted momentum after months of slow Russian gains in Europe's deadliest ground combat since World War Two.
"Now, for the most part, as we have started to advance, they are shelling all the routes to front positions, so our armoured vehicles can't deliver more infantry, ammunition and other things," said Petro Podaru, commander of a Ukrainian artillery unit.
Ukraine's military, which has been cautious so far in reporting gains in the area, said troops had advanced in places by more than a mile. Its forces had been on the defensive for half a year, weathering a huge winter and spring offensive by Moscow that saw only slow gains.

Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin says his forces inside Bakhmut itself are still advancing, on the cusp of pushing Ukrainian troops out of their last foothold in the built-up area on the city's Western outskirts.
But he accuses commanders of Russia's regular forces of abandoning vital ground on the flanks north and south of the city, raising the risk of troops inside being encircled.

The only troop that runs faster than a Wagner are the Russian regulars.
Every time the Russians take a city and then move on the Ukrainians say they fled.
The Ukes will win this one even though the Ruskies have captured 97% of Bakhmut.

Why else would a country fight and kill and bleed and die to seize a city and then leave if they are not fleeing?
You don’t seen to understand war. Once you take territory the enemy retreats and you move on to the next objective. The Ukrainian forces are all but gone from Bhakmut at this point.

Ukraine deputy defence minister says Russia on offensive in Bakhmut
Ukrainian deputy defence minister Hanna Maliar said in a Telegram post that Kyiv’s forces had repelled daylong attacks by Russia in the embattled city of Bakhmut on Wednesday.
“The enemy gathered most of its reserves to Bakhmut and significantly strengthened the group,” she said.
“Today the enemy attacked Bakhmut for the entire day. All attacks were repelled.”
All night long, Russian Forces 'worked' on Ukraine using a wide range of weapons
— Missile strikes were carried out on Odessa and its suburbs. Warehouses and industrial facilities where weapons and equipment were stored were hit.
— After the missile attack, Geran drones and decoys were used, explosions were heard in the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.
— A new missile strike hit targets in Kharkov, Kramatorsk, Pokrovsky district of the DPR, Kirovograd and Cherkassy regions.
— At 2 am, air-based missiles were launched from strategic bombers, hitting targets in the Poltava and Vinnitsa regions.
— Guided air bombs were used on targets in the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.
— In the morning (at about 04:00) "Calibers" were launched on targets in the Khmelnytsky, Zhytomyr and Kyiv regions.
The end of the air raid sounded only at 6 am (MSK).

Looks like Russian troops are not leaving any way for Ukraine troops to retreat - this may very well be the finish.

Most of the Ukrainian forces are gone from Bhakmut. There are always pockets of resistance that have to be cleaned out. There is no doubt as to the outcome of this conflict.
You’re right that there’s no doubt that the Soviets are going to be defeated both in Ukraine and in Moscow.
