Dutchman Joran van der Sloot, a suspect in the 2005 disappearance of an American teenager, will be extradited from Peru to face criminal charges in the US, according to media reports.
He is currently in Peru serving 28 years in prison for killing a 21-year-old Peruvian woman named Stephany Flores.
American Natalee Holloway, 18, went missing during a school trip in Aruba.
Van der Sloot faces federal wire fraud and extortion charges in the US.

In the US, Van der Sloot is accused of taking $25,000 from Beth Holloway, Natalee's mother, in exchange for information regarding the whereabouts of the 18-year-old's body.

Natalee Holloway's body was never found. She was officially declared dead in 2012 by an Alabama judge.
She was in Aruba on a high school graduation trip in May 2005 when she vanished. She was last seen leaving a bar with Van der Sloot.
Van der Sloot was arrested but never charged in connection with Holloway's disappearance.
"It has been a very long and painful journey, but the persistence of many is going to pay off. ..." Beth Holloway said in a statement on Wednesday. ...
Gustavo Meza-Cuadra, Peru's ambassador to the US, said in a statement that "we hope that this action will enable a process that will help to bring peace to Mrs Holloway and to her family, who are grieving in the same way that the Flores family in Peru".
Peruvian officials said that Van der Sloot will be temporarily handed over to the US for prosecution and will return to Peru following the proceedings, according to CBS News, the BBC's US partner.
A 2001 treaty between Peru and the US allows a suspect to be extradited for a trial but requires the prisoner be returned once judicial proceedings have concluded.

While not school sponsored it seems to have been a bit of tradition for this suburban town.
Mom swears that Natalee did not drink and had no previous relationships.

I like the way Turkey does it. If the sentence is 28 years, you get a cell for twenty eight years. No food, no clothes, no tv or medical. A cell.

Closure? That’s a very callous remark people make trying to be sympathetic. Do you think there is ever “closure” for something like this? Please, closure is gobbledygook for people trying to look caring. I would prefer someone to say nothing rather than tell me about “closure!”
I can’t imagine you ever get “over” something terrible like this. I suspect the family has made peace with the fact she is most likely dead.

Off of the east coast of Aruba the Atlantic Ocean drops off pretty quickly to several thousand feet deep.
Aruba is a long narrow island. It gets beat on by constant trade winds blowing east to west all the way from Africa. So much so that all the Divi Divi trees bend toward South America. It is right off the coast of Venezuela. The side facing the Atlantic is rocky barren desert. The side facing South America is where all the beaches and resorts/hotels are.
On the south end of the island there are about ten huge wind turbines that provide a lot of the electric power for the island. They also have a refinery and a desalinization plant. It is one of the very places in the world that wind turbines make sense. They have almost constant 30 mph winds.
My wife and I went there about ten year ago. Leave your golf clubs at home if you ever go. Those winds make it a really tough place to play.
I meant to add off the east coast of Aruba where the ocean drops to thousands of feet deep would be the ideal place to dump a body. The drop off is not that far off shore either.
Plus there is a place where they actually feed the sharks to keep them away from the resorts. Any local would know this.
There was an article last week that stated that he was going to be returned to Peru after the trial in Alabama to serve out the remainder of his sentence in Peru.
I have read that people never really “get over” the death of a child. Your children aren’t supposed to die before you do. I read that most marriages won’t survive the death of a minor child because the surviving parents are unable to stop blaming themselves or each other for not somehow preventing it, rational or not.
This will be a nice getaway and vacation for Joran van der Sloot. He is currently housed in a notoriously horrific prison in Peru. He will return to it and probably die there before he gets to serve time in the US prison system.
