The FR Canteen is Free Republic's longest running daily thread
specifically designed to provide entertainment and moral support for the military.
The doors have been open since Oct 7 2001,
the day of the start of the war in Afghanistan.
We are indebted to you for your sacrifices for our Freedom.
Howdy, lauren. *HUGZ*
Snuck one in on us, huh? LOL
Hope you’re having a grand time over there!
Howdy, Kathy.
Another windy day up there, I see. Not deterring the seaplane pilots one iota though.
Good luck this week! I hope you’re able to manage a little sleep the next couple of nights.
Hi Everybody!
(((HUGS)))
I was there back in the ‘70s for some reserve training.
Good evening, radu...did you get all your mowing done? Rain today?
Sun is in and out all day, but melting is almost complete!!!
I went to a National Boy Scout Jamboree there. For several decades the Boy Scouts would pay $1 to rent the fort out for the next ten or so days. Before we left our council camps each morning we were provided with MREs courtesy of the military. That would be lunch wherever we happened to be. Saw lots of ground vehicles and helicopters moving about the place. Also got to see President George H.W. Bush fly in on Marine One. Really great experience. The Scouts now have their own place in West Virginia that they have jamborees at. I’ll never forget A.P. Hill though.
Howdy, jimbug.
The best thing about these road trip threads is learning which FReepers spent some time at the various bases across the country. Pleased to meet you.
Your service is deeply appreciated.
Thanks for tonight’s Road Trip, Lauren!
Good evening, ML...((HUGS))...were you able to take Blue to lessons today?
And we thank you for your service to our country.
The Battle of Athens - 1946 Athens, Tennessee (full movie)
A small town in 1946 feeling intimidated by local, corrupt politicians, especially concerning voting issues - took up arms against their aggressors and turned the tide for the community. The second amendment to the U.S. Constitution worked very well!

Hey there, Kathy.
No mowing today, durn it. The plan was to knock it out after getting back from my “wellness check” appointment this afternoon. But while I was gone, it rained pretty hard here and the grass was too wet.
It seemed to stay pretty cloudy over the airports today but the sun poked out a few times. I went back in the live stream to watch the activity around Lake Hood and it was a BUSY day. The highlight so far was the owner of the 1944 Grumman Goose breaking it of the hangar to take that baby out for its first flight since last fall. That is such a cool plane.
It’s still early-ish there. Maybe, just maybe that last little bit of snow in your yard will be gone by sunset. :-)
We really have some nice early summer weather with temps in the 80's, loving it!
Good weekend of relaxing and visiting Robin and son. She is planting flowers galore in the backyard and they will look wonderful.
I'm keeping up with the lawn care and will mow again early tomorrow before it gets too hot. Other than that not much else happening.
How was your weekend?
I had to go to the orthopedist today, so I went by car. Had X-Rays done of my knee.
Guess what...my bones have no spurs, arthritis, or bone-on-bone. I will NOT need surgery after all.
The doctor said that my bones don’t match my birthday...they look like those of a woman 20 years younger.
Can’t figure out what has been causing the pain for the last three months.
I did, however, hike 3 miles this morning.
Hope I don’t harsh the road trip buzz of this thread, but…
Name change News: “ Fort A.P. Hill’s new name will honor pioneering female surgeon, Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, who provided life-saving care to soldiers during the Civil War while battling discrimination due to her sex and later was awarded the Medal of Honor for her service after being denied a pension because she was a woman.”
While Dr. Walker’s actions were admirable, I don’t really see how she relates to the training mission at this fort.
