Russia could have maintained Crimea and annexed the area they controlled in Donbas. If they they had limited themselves to this there would have been a lot of words from the West but not much more. But no, they had to invade, sought to capture all of Donbas plus the land bridge to Crimea, which has a clear Ukrainian majority population, and attempt to capture Kyiv in order to instal their own friendly government. Their greed brought on this war. It always amazes me those who criticize the Ukrainians for defending their country and not the Russians for invading.
You don’t seem to understand the Stalinist “referendums” don’t correspond with reality. Invading Russians have never controlled large areas that Putin insanely claims are Russia now. These are the fevered fantasies of a KGB corporal and there no justification for validating them.
