A ‘nervousness never seen before’ hits Moscow before Victory Day parades

When Vladimir Putin takes to the stage on Tuesday to commemorate the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany, his speech on Red Square will have been preceded by a turbulent week in which drones attacked the Kremlin and one of his top war leaders threatened mutiny.

The dramatic footage early last Wednesday of two drones flying over the walls of the Kremlin, its historical seat of power, exposed vulnerabilities in the heart of the Russian capital, putting Moscow on edge.

The authorities have banned the use of drones and started jamming GPS signals, leading to taxis appearing to be in the Moscow River on ride-hailing apps. Binoculars have hastily been handed out to police to spot incoming drones.

“There is a nervousness that I have never seen before,” said one official at the Moscow mayor’s office. “But Victory Day has to go ahead, there is no other option,” he added, speaking on conditions of anonymity.

Tellingly, on Friday, Putin took the unusual step to discuss the preparations for the 9 May Victory Day parade in a meeting with his security council, composed of Russia’s top state officials and heads of defence and security agencies.

Even before the drone attack on the Kremlin, there were signs of unease among the Russian leadership over the celebrations amid fears of Ukrainian strikes.

At least six Russian regions had scrapped the celebrations, with one region 400 miles from the border being the latest to cancel.

Anti-Russian Brits are telling me Russians are nervous. Sure, I believe that.

This is good news then.
Russia is clearly losing.
We can stop giving Ukraine billions in aid and weapons now, right?
We can disband NATO, the objective of NATO is now complete. Russia is destroyed, right?

As well, from the article itself:

“There is a nervousness that I have never seen before,” said one official at the Moscow mayor’s office. “But Victory Day has to go ahead, there is no other option,” he added, speaking on conditions of anonymity.

Again... “he added, speaking on conditions of anonymity.”

Anonymously cited. 🙄

What better day to get rid of Vlad is there? This may be the week... He can’t not show up... That would lead to rumors of his demise... Which makes his actual demise that much easier.

Sure it is, but do we need 750+ bases around the world? Seriously.

Commonsense should tell any halfway reasonable person that the Russians ought to be nervous!

China can be defeated economically, not militarily.

GPS jamming is not easy at all. GPS antennae on receivers are do not have omnidirectional receive patterns. They are hemispherical upwards. So a jammer has to be above the receiver. That means airborne and such a jammer needs lots of electrical power to generate jamming level signal strengths — which isn’t easy to have on flying jamming platforms.

So . . . jamming is not likely. This is true of the reports from the battlefield of US weapons failing accuracy because their GPS receiver for targeting is jammed. Unlikely. They are failing for some other reason. Jamming is just not that easy to do.

The Russians and Chinese don’t use GPS, of course. They both have their own GPS-like navigation satellite constellation in orbit and those are used for their precision weapons. Similarly, hard to jam.

Are you wholly unable to perceive and understand shades of gray or degrees of success?

This is mildly heartening news. It's at best a morale booster. But one does not totally abandon a course of action at the first sign of progress.

"One sparrow does not a summer make!"

When the Russian people are dragging Putin's stinking corpse through the streets of Moscow, à la Mussolini, and celebrating their liberation from his yoke of tyranny, then we can talk about stopping aid.

You're suggesting that the U.S. should scale back its defense spending?!

You would like to see a militarily less-formidable America?!

Fox News had an ex-navy guest on recently who related how the U.S. cannot keep pace with how fast the Chinese military can produce ships, and rightly said something should be done about it, but what’s Jaio Bai Deng gonna do?
