North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, said he will veto a proposed bill that would ban abortions after 12 weeks.
According to House Speaker Tim Moore and Senate leader Phil Berger, House and Senate Republicans came to a consensus on legislation that would enact the legislation.
Currently, state law prohibits abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy with the exceptions of circumstances involving rape, incest, fetal abnormality, or when the life of the mother is at risk.
Those exceptions remain in the new legislation, which Cooper has called an attack on women’s freedom to choose.
“It will effectively ban access to reproductive freedom earlier and sometimes altogether for many women because of new restrictions and requirements,” Cooper said in a press release. “This is why Republicans are ramming it through with no chance to amend. I will veto this extreme ban and need everyone’s help to hold it.”

Cooper is just another two-bit BABY KILLER.
Elections have consequences. In this case it’s life vs. murder. That’s always the choice when a Democrat is involved.
Since NC voters displayed their diminished cognition by twice electing Demonicrat Cooper as governor, the odds of defeating him in 2024 are not looking good.
I really don’t get it. How can people be so universally callous regarding unborn children? My mind is literally stunned by this.
If left unchecked, like most democRATS Roy Cooper would support killing babies up until to their first birthday.
herd instinct perhaps? as Tucker says it may be the strongest instinct at work in today’s USA
Isn’t NC on verge of a veto-proof Republican majority in the Legislature?
Override the veto...
We have a 2 term limit in NC, Cooper can’t run again. Whoever gets the GOP nod will most likely be running against current SAG josh stein.

Another NC article.
“A 12-week abortion ban was among dozens of bills approved by North Carolina lawmakers on the eve of the General Assembly’s crossover deadline on Wednesday.
Bills that do not involve appropriations or revenue or are not part of a legislative study must pass either the House or the Senate by the deadline in order to be eligible to be passed in the remainder of the long session or in the 2024 short session.
The deadline motivated the House to take up 56 bills in a marathon voting session Wednesday that stretched late into the evening, concluding with a 71-46 House vote – all Republicans present for it, all Democrats present against it – on Senate Bill 20 to ban abortion in North Carolina after 12 weeks. The legislation includes exceptions for rape, incest or fetal abnormality, while retaining a current exception for danger to the life of the mother.”
And in more NC news:
“North Carolina Superintendent Catherine Truitt is formally opposing proposed federal Title IX regulations for transgender athletes, arguing they undermine the intent of the law.
The U.S. Department of Education is collecting public comment through May 15 on a proposed revision to Title IX that would ban schools policies that prohibit transgender students from participating on sports teams aligned with their gender identity.
The proposed rule comes as lawmakers in North Carolina and elsewhere are pursuing legislation to protect the integrity of women’s sports by requiring participation based on biological sex at birth. Violations of Title IX law can result in withholding of federal funds, which accounted for 15.7%, or more than $1 billion of the North Carolina public school budget in 2022-23, not including COVID-19 and child nutrition funds”

““Medical studies show us that there is an average 10-12% performance gap between elite males and elite females, ‘which is almost entirely attributable … to the production of testosterone,’” Truitt wrote, pointing to research from Duke University. “Testosterone affects everything from muscle size and strength; to heart size; to higher red blood count; to the percentage of fat on an athlete’s body. Testosterone production is ‘fundamental to the discrepancies in athletic performance typical of men and women.’””
It appears that NC voters selected conservatives for every state-wide position in the last election for those offices EXCEPT for the position of Governor. That’s quite an anomaly.
I wouldn’t consider Tillis a conservative, although he’s not part of the state government.
It’ll get overwritten by the Rep supermajority so ignore this BS!
Just for clarity, it’s On demand to 12 weeks. Rape and Incest - 24 Weeks. Anytime to save the Mother’s life.
Republicans have a veto proof majority on both sides of the capitol. Use it.
On paper it sounds unusual, but the last Repub Gov of NC, Pat McCrory, was not very good. He forgot about his voters and went with big business. It did not help that he did not seem very smart, e.g. he did bone headed things for no good reasons and then did not explain why. To the average Joe, he seemed like a talking head- reading and doing what was handed to him.
Another coward Republican who shies away from cultural and social issues because Gen Z and “free” women must be pandered to. “Reproductive Rights” matter.

Thanks for the explanation. I’m over in neighboring Georgia and although I try to keep up-to-date with legislation in surrounding states, I’m not always aware of the underlying issues facing the voters.
