Natural gas is the cleanest "fossil" fuel there is.
Only Hydrogen would be "cleaner" except if you include production, storage and handling, it's probably no better.

Where I live, all* electricity comes from burning coal and natural gas.
*There is a small solar farm that exists primarily for marketing purposes. I retired a couple of years ago from my state’s primary energy company and have toured our plants.

The only byproduct of a hydrogen-based “fuel” system will be dihydrogen monoxide, which is the most abundant and plentiful greenhouse gas in the atmosphere by several orders of magnitude.

Hydrogen is worse. Without exception, it requires more energy to create pure hydrogen, store, and transport than it produces. Nat Gas is already there just waiting to be extracted.
