Meet the MiG-41: Russia has plans for a 6th generation fighter to keep up with the United States and China.
But don’t hold your breath.
Western sanctions are keeping aviation components and microprocessors in short supply in Russia. The MiG-41 next generation fighter could be a bridge too far with a lack of money and resources to develop it fully.
There is a war on, and priority is with the army that is more focused on the building of tanks and the air force striving for more stand-off missiles. The MiG-41 may never make it to fruition, but let’s take a look at what Russia is planning to get a better idea about what a next-generation fighter means for Moscow.

Boom operators, like pilots, can be rated in more than one type of aircraft.
I remember when the KC-10 came out.
I was going to the NCO Leadership school and my room mate was a KC-135 boom operator and wanted to get a KC-10 slot.
I never did learn if he did. All I know is he had several Air Medals (which are worth promotion points), one for landing the aircraft with only two engines, which, of course, he didn’t do because he wasn’t the pilots. I was a little ticked off that the USAF didn’t have a similar medal for us non-flying types.

The common culture of the military is that the Air Force hands out medals like candy, and the common culture in the Air Force is that air crews get medals like candy.
None of this is really true, but since medals count for promotion points in the enlisted Air Force, everyone is keen on getting such awards. In a way, you can call it a motivator that’s good for the service, because people will go above and beyond to earn them. Still, they must be earned.
Air crews, though.... Don’t get me started!
