The United States is wiring Ukraine with sensors that can detect bursts of radiation from a nuclear weapon or a dirty bomb and can confirm the identity of the attacker.
In part, the goal is to make sure that if Russia detonates a radioactive weapon on Ukrainian soil, its atomic signature and Moscow’s culpability could be verified.
Ever since Russia invaded Ukraine 14 months ago, experts have worried about whether President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia would use nuclear arms in combat for the first time since the American bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. The preparations, mentioned last month in a House hearing and detailed Wednesday by the National Nuclear Security Administration, a federal agency that is part of the Energy Department, seem to constitute the hardest evidence to date that Washington is taking concrete steps to prepare for the worst possible outcomes of the invasion of Ukraine, Europe’s second largest nation.

Some FReepers think that I am talking out of my rectal region when I say that if NATO and the US get directly involved in this conflict it will go nuclear and not just in a regional way.

Seems to me that the REAL problem is that Putin is the one perfectly willing to initiate a nuclear war because of his own stupidity in launching a failed invasion of Ukraine. He’s the BAD guy here...
I think you missed the point. The sensors are in Ukraine in case Russia uses a nuke in Ukraine. In the unlikely event the US and NATO get actively involved in combat in this war a nuke being detonated in Ukraine would not be the issue; but a nuke detonated in a NATO country would be.

No, I don’t think Russia is that suicidal. But, since it has threatened using nukes it doesn’t hurt to be proactive in the unlikely event it does.
You are quite correct. You forgot to mention that they’ll only use them if they lose this conflict with the Ukraine. The only way that I see them losing is if NATO and the US get directly involved.

Maybe if Putin is cornered and he may lose his life. But right now it's unlikely for that to happen. This war is looking more like the Korean War so far. A stalemate.

I don’t think Putin would use a nuke in Ukraine. The radiation fallout would be carried by the winds back into Russia and Moscow.
It’s a possibility if it is a first strike that decapitates all leadership in very short order and they can take out our nuke subs quickly, too.
