Rep. Clyburn calls McCarthy’s debt limit legislation ‘dead on arrival’ in Senate
The Hill ^ | 04/29/2023 | Jared Gans

Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.), the assistant House Democratic leader, said the debt limit bill backed by Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) will be “dead on arrival” in the Senate.

Clyburn said Saturday in an interview on MSNBC that he does not believe the Lift, Save, Grow Act — which the House narrowly passed in a 217-215 vote on Wednesday — itself will bring President Biden to negotiate on raising the debt ceiling, but negotiations can start after the House bill is dead.

This is exactly why the Republicans should have submitted a budget bill that said;

1. No debt limit increase.
2. 10% reduction of spending in all departments
3. 25% reduction in foreign aid.
4. All newly hired IRS agents will be permanently transferred
to Border Patrol.
5. Dept. of education budget and staffing to be cut by 75%
and funds transferred to Border enforcement.

Unfortunately, the media will blame any government shutdown on the Republicans.

I remember there was a shutdown during the Obama years. Obama made a point of closing all of the National Parks and National Monuments, including those in DC where people just walk around. Had barriers erected so that vets couldn’t visit the Viet Nam Memorial. All of it was the Republicans’ fault, of course.

Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC)

82 years old. Another octogenarian who should have retired a long time ago.

"Trimming a little bit here and there from spending is meaningless."

That's exactly right, and therefore any GOP wannabe who genuflects to national debt -- even so much as a passing talking point -- is grabbing the third rail of politics in a completely unforced error. It's a non-starter in a national election.

And ... cue the Meatball!

"For Ron DeSantis, fixing the national debt is a cornerstone of his U.S. Senate campaign.

The North Florida Republican has even gone so far as to decline his congressional pension after taking office.

Nevertheless, boasting a reputation as a “leading fiscal conservative in the House,” DeSantis doesn’t quite walk the same walk in his own campaign. As he frequently rails against the national debt, comparing a recent budget deal to “giving a shopaholic an unlimited credit card,” the congressman seems perfectly fine carrying a boatload of debt on his own."

Aww…. Isn’t that cute, using playground name- calling just like Trump! At least you let the rest of the world see your level of maturity and intellect- about that of a 5-year old. And you can’t even tell that the article you are using to try to support your silly proposition is from when Desantis briefly ran for Senate, not anything recent. But it is interesting that you think worrying about the massive debt bringing us ever closer to financial collapse is a “completely unforced error “. Just one more piece of evidence that neither Trump nor many of his supporters are conservatives.

They will. But the republicans should remind the media that if democrats thought the debt limit was so important, they would have passed it in December.
