North Dakota has adopted one of the strictest anti-abortion laws in the country - as Republican Gov. Doug Burgum signed legislation banning nearly all procedures.
The slim exception is if the abortion is performed in the first six weeks of pregnancy. In those early weeks, abortion would be allowed only in cases of rape, incest or medical emergency, such as ectopic pregnancy.
Most women do not realize they are pregnant by six weeks. Until now, procedures in the state had previously been legal until up to 22 weeks of pregnancy.
'This bill clarifies and refines existing state law ... and reaffirms North Dakota as a pro-life state,' Burgum said in a statement.
Last year´s U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide has triggered multiple state laws banning or restricting the procedure.
Many were met with legal challenges. Currently, bans on abortion at all stages of pregnancy are in place in at least 13 states and on hold in others because of court injunctions.
On the other side, Democratic governors in at least 20 states this year launched a network intended to strengthen abortion access in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court decision that eliminated women´s constitutional right to end a pregnancy and shifted regulatory powers over the procedure to state governments.
The North Dakota law is designed to take effect immediately, but last month the state Supreme Court ruled a previous ban is to remain blocked while a lawsuit over its constitutionality proceeds.
Last week, lawmakers said they intended to pass the latest bill as a message to the state´s high court signaling that the people of North Dakota want to restrict abortion.

Should be at inception, but I’ll take what I can
Same for me.
This is not, properly speaking, an abortion. The intent here is not to terminate a pregnancy because the child is unwanted (elective abortion), but an attempt, rather, to treat a separate but serious medical condition in the course of which, unfortunately, the child does not survive.
Tell that to a 12 year old girl that gets raped by her father.
Nice straw man argument. The scenario makes up what? 1/100th of 1% of all abortions performed in this country? I’ll tell you what, I’ll give you those if the rest of them can be banned. Would you take that deal?
Smart deterrent to keep liberals from moving to red states.
Killing a child who had nothing to do with the evil involved only compounds the damage. I don’t say this lightly. It’s horrendous, but abortion doesn’t make the rape go away. Abortions are a rapist’s best friend.
With this law the father can’t hide the crime by way of abortion so he goes to jail.
If it bans medical emergency then it is wrong.
Great question.
And frequently neither does the mother
I am disappointed that the Republican Establishment front group called Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America is pushing 15-week legislation instead of actually working to protect babies from conception forward.
15-week legislation is ridiculous.
It is a way for Republican politicians to do the least that they can possibly do for pro-lifers.
This is the DM reporting. I’ll check pro life news sites in the morning and post again. I’m sure the DM is blowing this out of the ball park.
I posted this tonight because I was shocked it was done at 6 weeks
Gospel singer Ethyl Waters’ mother was raped by a white man when she was a young teenager.
Why kill the baby?
medical emergency is never banned. it’s the choice of who lives...the mother or the baby.
Agree 100%!!!
Unless the bill bans abortion due to life threatening conditions (which I doubt), it’s not a problem. A 12 yr old would qualify as that.
I’m good with that
