Dozens of Portland firefighters battled a blaze at a former tavern that neighbors say had been taken over by squatters for more than a year.
"It was clearly a time bomb waiting to go off, and our concerns fell through the cracks," Dusty McCord, who lives near the former Farmer's Barn Tavern, told The Oregonian. "The level of negligence is breathtaking."

But given that it’s Portland I guess that’s not necessary.
The property owners applied for a demolition permit in February. Do you think the city bureaucrats will fast track it now?
I wouldn’t hold my breath, Oregon public employees are are as useless as teets on a boar.

I don’t think it just “went up in flames”. I think it was set fire to by the squatters. City leaders should be personally liable for reimbursing the owner (unless he/she/it is a liberal who just allowed the squatters take over).

Now that the homeless have lost their home, where are they going to live...or something like that?
If a lowlife moved into Tiffany's Jewelry Store security guards would remove the person at closing... they wouldn't have to get an eviction notice and fight the scum for months.

Happens all the time. Homeless, bums, drug addicts; start fires indoors for cooking and warmth. And crap gets burned down. They don’t care and just move on to the next one and do it again.
