I just got back from a trip to Bakersfield, Calif. and drove past Dead Man's Curve, an abandoned switchback on Interstate 5 just north of Lebec. I've actually driven on it, just to brag about having done so, but it's very narrow and hasn't been maintained for about a century, so if you're out drag racing, it's no place to play.

The old Ridge Route? I used to drive back and forth from LA to Bakersfield to visit my folks. What a trip that was for my VW bug. And many years before that Richfield used to have their yearly picnic somewhere up there. I don’t remember where.
