OTTAWA — Early Monday evening, a special container, about five to six square feet, was unloaded from an airplane at Toronto’s international airport. Inside it was more than 20 million Canadian dollars, about $14.8 million, in gold and other valuables. It was swiftly moved into a secure cargo holding facility.
Then, like many a suitcase, it vanished.
Announcing the theft on Thursday, Inspector Stephen Duivesteyn of the Peel Regional Police, the force that patrols Toronto Pearson Airport, offered few details about how the high-value container had disappeared beyond perhaps the obvious: by “illegal means.”
The investigators gave so little information apparently because the theft remained a mystery to them.
“We are three days in, so our investigators have their eyes open to all avenues,” Inspector Duivesteyn told reporters in Mississauga, Ontario, where the airport is. “We are looking at all angles of how this item was stolen.”

Bet there's a nice kickback too.
It's a piece a cake!
I did the math, depending on the configuration, it’s about 14 bars of gold.
Regards,
“a special container, about five to six square feet”
Suitcase sized. Easy peasy.
Another story that I read said 2 tons of gold.
I saw that same article. Which one is right?
We have yet to see how it works out for this new bunch.
If they’ll just keep their mouths shut, no new cars, no fur coats for the wives ... :)
As an aside, the Lufthansa heist was said to be worth $6 mil. and this one is being reported as $14.8 mil.
I suspect that after adjusting for inflation this one is worth far less.
The Lufthansa heist had no gold reported, but the theft amount to, in 2021 dollars, about $24.4 million.

I figured it would be a lot more than $14.8 mil.
I’m a little surprised the inflation adjustment is only 4Xs as much as the ‘78 value.
Gold has risen well beyond the rate of inflation in that time period as well.
In December 1978, gold was worth about $920 in todays dollars.
Today, gold is trading for $2700.
I thought the low/high for today was $2001/$2005.
Anyway, I think they are reporting the current dollar value of this heist which would be the basis of an inflation adjustment to 1978 dollar values.
Dudley Do-Right did it.
No Air Tag carefully hidden in a box like that?
I’m not saying it was aliens 👽👽👽👽👽

I have faith in bagster too
And DFWgator
I read that Thread too and at current price (as of 16:30 est 4/20/23) I calculated it to be $128,320,000.00 USD for the 2 tons (4000lbs * 16oz@lb * $2005 and some change @ oz) I see the price has dropped to $1985/oz at this time.
How does TWO TONS of gold walk away?
